Pokémon Legends Arceus Trailer Reveals an OpenWorld Prequel Game

The first Pokémon Legends: Arceus has been released, showing an open-world game where players can explore the past of the Sinnoh region.

As part of today’s Pokémon Presents event, the first details and look at the new game have been revealed. Arriving in early 2022, the Nintendo Switch title will see players building the first Sinnoh Pokédex using a new (or rather, old) style of Poké Ball. The game will also feature new mechanics, as the trailer shows the ability to run, roll and throw a Poké Ball in real-time to catch, rather than going into a separate RPG-style catching sequence. The Starter Pokémon will come from a mix of regions and include Alola’s Rowlett, Johto’s Cyndaquil and Unova’s Oshawatt. And as the title suggests, Arceus will be the game’s Legendary. Check out the trailer, images and more details on the game below:

The fun of exploring while catching Pokémon and filling in a Pokédex has always been a core part of the Pokémon video game series. Pokémon Legends: Arceus was developed with the desire to deliver an experience infused with new action and RPG elements that go beyond the framework established thus far, while honoring the core gameplay of past Pokémon titles.

As Trainers explore the natural expanses in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, they’ll encounter Pokémon that call these grand vistas home. To catch wild Pokémon, players can study the Pokémon’s behaviors, sneak up to them, then throw Poké Balls. Players can also battle wild Pokémon with their ally Pokémon. By throwing the Poké Ball holding their ally Pokémon near a wild Pokémon, players will seamlessly enter battle. This new gameplay angle is intended to provide Trainers with an immersive experience.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus brings Trainers to the vast Sinnoh region as it existed in the past, long before the setting for Pokémon Diamond and Pokémon Pearl was established. Rich in nature and with Mount Coronet towering at its heart, this is a Sinnoh unlike anything Trainers have experienced before as they embark to create the region’s first Pokédex.

As they start off on their adventure, Trainers will be able to choose either Rowlet, Cyndaquil, or Oshawott as their first partner Pokémon. These three Pokémon arrived with a Pokémon Professor, who encountered them on research excursions to various regions.

Introduced in Generation IV with Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, Arceus is a Legendary Pokémon that is said to have created not just the Sinnoh region but actually the entire universe. As such, a game exploring the early Pokémon world set around Sinnoh and Arceus makes a lot of sense. In the game, Pokémon trainers and leagues don’t yet exist. Humans live in villages while Pokémon roam free in the wild. A professor will arrive and give the player their Starter and set them on their journey of cataloging and catching Pokémon.

The game was announced today alongside the rumored remakes of Diamond and Pearl, dubbed Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, which will be released later this year. They join the previously announced Pokémon Snap sequel arriving in April.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus for the Nintendo Switch will arrive in early 2022.
