A strange new teaser hints at even more pocket monsters and regional variants coming to the Hisui region in Pokémon Legends: Arceus.

The Pokémon Company dropped the latest trailer for next year’s period game, and it adds some interesting wrinkles to the lore. When Pokémon Legends: Arceus was first announced, it was confirmed to be set in a version of the Sinnoh region before the modern-day. Called the Hisui region, PokéBalls are made of wood and powered by steam, outfits and buildings throw back to certain feudal styles, and the land is covered in Pokémon from various other regions along with new variants and evolutions of familiar pocket monsters. But this latest teaser involves two researchers using a video camera to shoot some warped footage of some new creatures.

The whole teaser is almost entirely fuzzy and glitchy, with only brief glimpses of landscapes and what appear to be some wild Snorunt. The narrator hints at as much, though it’s not clear if these will be regional variants. The landscape is described as covered in snow, so it seems that it may just be regular Snorunt. The cameraperson then ascends some mountains and encounters another Pokémon, wondering if it’s a Growlithe or Vulpix. The unseen creature is said to have fluffy fur around its head and yellow eyes. A red tail is then described before something appears to attack the researcher and the video ends.

All of the looks at the game so far have been fairly standard, revealing gameplay footage and offering updates on new features and creatures. This trailer instead has no proper footage and is narrative in nature. It also adds a horror tinge to the world in quite an unusual move. Not much can be gleaned from it, but it will likely be followed by a more proper reveal so fans will just have to wait.

So far, multiple existing Pokémon have been confirmed for the game, along with two regional variants and two regional evolutions. A Noble Pokémon was also introduced, a new category of pocket monster that seems akin to Legendary or Mythical Pokémon. But there are still plenty of characters yet to be revealed ahead of the game’s release early next year.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus releases Jan. 28, 2022, on Nintendo Switch.
