The Pokémon Company has stated that Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the beginning of a new era of Pokémon video games, suggesting it might be the first in a new Pokémon Legends series. These titles will differ greatly from the tried and true formula of the original Pokémon games, but they still seem to be considered “mainline” Pokémon games, building upon the world the past eight generations of Pokémon have created. Assuming the Pokémon Legends series will continue to revisit pre-existing regions, Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ starter Pokémon could be a hint at which regions will be explored next.
During February 2021 Pokémon Presents livestream – the one celebrating Pokémon’s 25th anniversary – Game Freak revealed Pokémon Legends: Arceus as its most ambitious project to date. This new, open-world experience will offer a refreshing twist on the franchise and aims to take Pokémon into a new era. Pokémon Legends: Arceus introduces a lot of new mechanics, raising questions about what this new experience will be like.
One thing is for sure: Pokémon Legends will be different from any other Pokémon game prior. While players have yet to see the full scope of what this new game is like, The Pokémon Company seems set on integrating this new style into the mainline games for years to come. Fans may have little info so far on Pokémon Legends: Arceus, but what was shown may give insight into where this potential Pokémon Legends series is taking players next.
Pokémon Legends’ Starter Pokémon Could Reveal The Next Region
Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ starter Pokémon are a mix of starters from different regions. While Legends: Arceus takes place in the Sinnoh region, first introduced in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, its setting far in the past means the original Gen 4 starters will appear as wild Pokémon. Players will instead choose between Cyndaquil, Rowlet, and Oshawott, each from a different generation and region. They are brought to the feudal land of Sinnoh by a traveling professor whom the player must help complete the first-ever Sinnoh Pokédex. It is possible that the traveling professor could be responsible for the first Pokédexes of other regions of the world, too, including the regions where they obtained Cyndaquil, Rowlet, and Oshawott.
Cyndaquil is from the Johto region, Rowelt is from Alola, and Oshawott is from Unova. If the traveling professor from Pokémon Legends has visited those regions, they could be where the next Legends game will take place. If Pokémon Legends titles intend to follow similar storylines, players will be completing the first Pokédexes for regions all over the Pokémon world, simultaneously learning more about the history of each region.
If this theory is true, the next Pokémon Legends game could take place in Johto, Alola, or Unova. Johto’s Gen 2 and Unova’s Gen 5 will be next up on the list for potential remakes, so it would make sense for their remakes to be accompanied by a Pokémon Legends game – just like Sinnoh’s Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, accompanied by Legends: Arceus. Plus, Gen 5’s Unova region is a peculiar one that deserves to be delved into a little more. A Pokémon Legends: Swords of Justice would be a great way to expand on Unova’s mysterious history.
