How to get Mew in Pokémon Let’s Go

Getting Mystery Gifts such as Mew is as easy as it’s every been in Pokémon Let’s Go.

First, you need to play the game until the ‘Communicate’ part of the pause menu opens up. For us, that appeared after visiting Viridian City (the game’s second town) and healing our Pokémon at the Pokémon Center for the first time.

Once ‘Communicate’ is available’, you can get started. Here’s how to do it, step by step.

1. Connect your Poké Ball Plus as your controller, if you haven’t already. To do so, go to the game’s pause menu and select Options, by pressing Y, and then ‘Open Controller Settings’. Press a button on the Pokémon Go plus – you may need to hold the button down – and soon enough it’ll light up red as the current controller in use.

Other Pokémon Let’s Go Mew details worth knowing

There are a handful of other things we can confirm regarding Mew in Pokémon Let’s Go. Here’s what we know:

  • Mew cannot be acquired any other way in Let’s Go – you can’t transfer your Mew from Pokémon Go into Let’s Go, as it’s a Mythical Pokémon (barring Meltan, a Pokémon being ‘Mythical’ means you can’t trade it in Pokémon Go).
  • Mew will have great stats – similarly to most Legendary and Mythical Pokémon in mainline games, Mew will have three random stats of its six maxed out – so rated as ‘best’ – and the other three will be randomised. If you’re lucky, its Speed and Special Attack will be high. Those are the most useful stats for using Mew as an offensive Special Attacker!

  • Mew is extremely useful in Let’s Go – if you want to use Mew in your playthrough, instead of just storing it for the sake of filling out your Pokédex, Mew is actually a superb choice for your team. Let’s Go’s reduced roster of just the original 151 Pokémon means that there are very few strong Psychic-types to choose from. Only Alakazam could be argued to be more effective, and that requires trading in order to evolve it from Kadabra. Why is Mew so effective, you might be wondering? Well, your main foe, Team Rocket, are predominantly users of Poison-type enemies, and Psychic is one of only two types that are super-effective against it. It’ll be useful in a huge amount of your battles, basically!
  • It seems like you can get Mew very early – we haven’t tested just how early it unlocks yet, but it seems as though you can get Mew as soon as you’ve got your first Pokémon (either Pikachu or Eevee) and have gained access to the Mystery Gift functionality in-game. It arrives as a Level 1 Pokémon, so you’ll need to some training up either way! We’ll update this page when we’ve confirmed the earliest point you can get it.
  • You can only get one Mew from a Poké Ball Plus – so, say you own a Poké Ball Plus and have claimed your Mew as a Mystery Gift, no one else could then get another Mew from that Poké Ball Plus. Each Poké Ball Plus has just the one Mew ‘in’ it, so to speak.
