‘Pokemon Mystery Dungeon’ Coming to 3DS [Updated]

Pokemon is finally returning to the 3DS in the form of a brand new ‘Pokemon Mystery Dungeon’, according to scans from the latest issue of Corocoro magazine.

Even before the Nintendo 3DS came out, fans of the Pokemon franchise were speculating what an installment on the handheld would look and play like. The upgraded power of the 3DS compared to its predecessor is significant enough to provide players with a much better looking game, but other than the mediocre Pokemon Rumble Blast that released last year, there hasn’t been anything to quench the insatiable thirst of Pokemon fans on the handheld.

Now Nintendo has announced that they’ll be bringing the next iteration of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon to their 3D-enabled gaming device.

Scans of the game first emerged in Japanese gaming mag Corocoro, and it was confirmed in the issue that it’ll release under the monicker of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagate and the Infinite Labyrinth. Traditionally Pokemon Mystery Dungeon has come in two separate versions, but this time around there will only be one — instantly eliminating the painstaking process of choosing which edition to get.

Even though there won’t be two separate versions like past games in the Mystery Dungeon series, the software itself is still very similar to its predecessors. Just like other games, this title stars a person who is transformed into a Pokemon. This time around, players can take on the role of a monster from the Unova region. Pikachu, Oshawott, Snivy, Tepig, and Axew are the currently announced character possibilities, but they may end up being joined by a handful of other monsters.

The Augmented Reality feature of the 3DS will also be put to use in a very gimmicky fashion. Pointing the handheld’s camera at something circular will open up a “magnagate”, which will then in turn open up new dungeons for players to explore. Anything from a roll of duct tape to a clock on the wall will suffice, and gamers can watch as a portal is opened into the world of Pokemon right before their very eyes.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Magnagate and the Infinity Labyrinth probably won’t arrive in stores until 2013, but the upcoming release of Pokemon Black 2 and Pokemon White 2 should help quell the anxiety of deprived Pokemon fans.
