Pokémon One of the Most Beautiful BugTypes Is More Gruesome Than You Think

The Pokémon franchise is populated by many weird and wonderful creatures capable of harnessing the elements and utterly destroying their opponents. From cute to cool to downright weird, there are nearly 1,000 Pokémon species, populating this ever-growing world. Even, just like in the real-world, the cute and beautiful Pokémon can sometimes be just as deadly as the big and obviously monstrous ones.

Examples include Gorebyss, which is pretty and pink, but it drains the fluids from its prey using its sharp mouth, and Sylveon, which uses its ribbons to opponents into a false sense of security before striking. However, there’s one Pokémon associated with beauty and Pokémon contests who might be scarier than these others: Beautifly.

Beautifly is a Bug/Flying-type Pokémon introduced in Generation III. It is one of two potential final forms of Wurmple, Dustox being the other. Classified as the Butterfly Pokémon, Beautifly got plenty of airtime in the anime as one of May’s Pokémon, which showed off its beauty and grace in Contents. As such, it’s easy to think of this Pokémon as being kind and harmless. However, Beautifly is still a Pokémon, which means it can still unleash devastating moves.

Beautifly’s moveset includes life-draining options like Absorb, Mega Drain and Giga Drain, which feed right into its rather disturbing Pokédex entries. According to the Hoenn Pokédex, Beautifly has an aggressive nature — which might be why it can learn Rage. Its mouth is described as a coiled needle, and some Pokédex entries describes this mouth as being used by this “savage” Pokémon to drain its prey’s fluids. Despite appearances, Beautifly is actually a vicious predator who literally sucks the life out of its prey.

This is oddly not that uncommon in real life. Mosquitos are well-known for being blood-sucking insects, but there are also vampire moths, which can get their proboscis through human skin to suck up some blood. Other butterflies and moths will suck on blood when they get a chance too through a behavoir called puddling, named because usually it involves a mud puddle or rotting foliage. Butterflies get their salt and a few other choice nutrients this way, with carrion being yet another target of puddling, as blood contains the same nutrients that they need.

It’s hard to picture such a beautiful Pokémon being this dangerous, but beauty in nature often signals danger as well. Bright colors in flora tells animals to come check them out and assist with pollination and distribution, but bright colors in fauna usually indicates something is poisonous. Caterpillars are bright and vibrant, but most will leave nasty stinging hairs in the skin if touched. Butterflies can be beautiful, but they can be dangerous too — though not to the extent that Beautifly is. The notion that such a harmless looking creature gets its nutrients in such a gruesome way is a disturbing reminder that Pokémon, no matter how stunning, are living creatures capable of some vicious actions.
