Back in 2005, Nintendo released Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness on the Nintendo GameCube. One of its main draws was to be able to capture Lugia, one of the legendary Pokemon from Pokemon Gold/Silver. However, one player has managed to take that Lugia from 2005 all the way over to Pokemon Sword/Shield.

As a sequel to Pokemon Colosseum, Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness was a lot different from traditional Pokemon games. Instead of capturing wild Pokemon and players raising them as their own, evil organizations in the game have managed to close the hearts of Pokemon, making them lash out at anything including humans. The player’s job in this game is to use a handheld device that is used to “snag” these “Shadow Pokemon” and purify them, which will revert the Pokemon back to normal.

Shadow Lugia is the most difficult Pokemon to purify in Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness, requiring players to make full use of the purification system. It is also the most powerful Pokemon by far, and after purifying it, it comes with a variety of moves that a regular Lugia cannot normally learn like Psycho Boost. Lugia is an incredibly popular Pokemon, having been the star of the second Pokemon movie.

In order to transfer the Shadow Lugia out of Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness into Pokemon Sword/Shield, it requires a lot of moving through the generations of Pokemon games to make it work. Players will need to have a GameCube/Game Boy Advance Link Cable then transferring it to one of the Game Boy Advance Pokemon games like Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald or Pokemon FireRed/LeafGreen. Next, it should be transferred to a Nintendo DS Pokemon game via the DS/GBA connections which requires a DS Lite or original DS to do. From there, a move to Pokemon Bank is possible via Pokemon Transporter, which is a 3DS app. Finally, once the Pokemon is in Pokemon Bank, it is transferrable to the Switch via Pokemon Home.

The former Shadow Pokemon is a powerful addition to have for any team, especially for its unique moveset. It requires a lot of effort, but it’s a cool thing to show off, like Reddit user lunderamia showed off in their post. This will be a hard thing to replicate given how scarce the GameCube/Game Boy Advance Link Cables are, and the dying batteries on the Game Boy Advance games. So this Lugia will be quite a unicorn in today’s Pokemon world.
