A Pokémon fan recently showcased their 3D-printed models of Charizard, Tyranitar and Nidoking imagined as kaiju-style monsters. The three Pokémon have similar physical traits to the towering, iconic kaiju monsters found onscreen – especially Charizard in Gigantamax form, which mirrors Godzilla.

“Kaiju” refers to a style of Japanese films and television involving monsters. The term can also refer to the monsters themselves – which are often as large as a skyscraper, destroying entire cities while engaging with local military forces and other threats. The most iconic character out of this genre is Godzilla, the very kaiju that launched the media franchise in 1954. Since then, the genre has expanded to other titular characters like Mothra and Rodan, and also found its footing in pop culture beyond Japan’s borders. No matter how far Godzilla travels, however, the iconic kaiju retains its classic lizardlike look.

This distinctive kaiju look is strongly embodied by Becca3D’s Pokémon sculptures. The user used the power of 3D printing to create their uniquely designed Charizards, Tyranitars and Nidokings in kaiju forms of various sizes. Becca3D’s renditions of the Pokémon show added jagged horns, deeply ridged scales, large claws and weighty-looking tails. The added embellishments make the Pokémon easily mistakable for Godzilla-like kaiju, if not for their recognizable color schemes. Other Pokémon fans expressed their awe with Becca3D’s work, and some even suggested other Pokémon that would suit their kaiju-inspired style – a few fans proposed Aggron, while another said, “There’s a lot of great Kaiju potential in Pokemon. Groudon and Kyogre come to mind.”

Becca3D’s kaiju Pokémon sculptures are not the first (or last time) the two franchises melded together. Last year, a fan went in the opposite direction and created illustrations of Godzilla and other kaiju in the Pokémon universe. Similarly, other Pokémon fans have shown their affinity for the franchise through 3D renditions like that of Becca3D. Less than a week ago, a talented barista managed to make an amazingly detailed rendition of the ghost-type Gengar using the foam on top of a latte.

Based on how Becca3D described their post as an “update,” hopefully there will be more kaiju-inspired Pokémon figurines joining this already impressive-looking collection. Maybe they will respond to other Pokémon fans and add new Pokémon to the mix – a Pokémon like Garchomp would lend itself well to the user’s style. It would also be interesting to see Becca3D take on the challenge of turning a cuter Pokémon into a monstrous terror, such as a kaiju-style Snorlax. Those who are curious will have to wait and see what they decide to do next.
