Pokémon Remoraid & Octillerys Designs Are WAY More Interesting Than They Seem

The world of Pokémon is full of forgotten or underappreciated monsters. For every Charizard or Mewtwo that becomes a mainstay of the brand’s promotional efforts, there are five other Pocket Monsters that are lost to time, largely forgotten or neglected by many trainers. Remoraid and its evolution Octillery are two such creatures. Introduced in Generation II’s Johto region, these Water-types were lost in the vast sea of competition that this type boasts.

Additionally, these two were incredibly difficult to obtain. Remoraid could only be captured by fishing in a single location, Route 44. In this area, only a single body of water exists, and Remoraid can only be fished up by using the Super Rod, an item that isn’t obtained until after defeating the Elite Four. This chance can be increased during Remoraid swarms, but such events are uncommon, and a player will only be aware of them by checking the radio diligently.

Octillery, the final form, has some good attacking stats with 105 base in both physical and special attack, acceptable defenses of 75 and a low 45 in speed. These stats make Octillery unpopular in competitive scenes, but they make sense considering the inspiration behind this evolution lines’ designs. Some fans decry Remoraid’s evolution into Octillery as one that makes little sense, as a fish transforming into an octopus has little design cohesion. In reality, it makes perfect sense, and is one of the reasons why this Johto duo deserves more recognition.

Remoraid is based on a handgun, specifically a revolver, and Octillery is a tank or mobile artillery device such as a Howitzer. This design is clearer in the leaked Pokémon Gold beta sprites, in which Remoraid sports a tail that resembles a grip and a torso resembling a revolver’s cylinder. Octillery is far more armored, even sporting a rather fetching helmet. These designs were toned down to avoid direct references to weaponry, but the spirit still exists. Remoraid’s tail still represents a handle and gunsight, and Octillery’s tentacles still curl up to represent wheels or treads on a tank.

This theme extends to the Pokémon’s movesets. Remoraid and Octillery have a focus on “beam” attacks and other forms of bullets, bombs and lasers. In Gen II, Octillery is one of a handful of Pokémon to learn Hyper Beam and Ice Beam by leveling up, and the duo also gains access to moves such as Psybeam, Aurora Beam and even Flamethrower. Today, Octillery also has access to the likes of Bullet Seed, Sludge Bomb, Fire Blast and Rock Blast.

Both Remoraid and Octillery deserve far more love than they receive from both Nintendo and fans at large. The revolver fish and tank octopus should be counted among some of Johto’s (and indeed the Water-type’s) very best. Next time players take a trek through the Johto region (or any other region where these underappreciated Water-types dwell), they should consider grabbing one for their team to give them the love they deserve.
