Although the game is not even two weeks old, a speedrunner called Werster has managed to beat Pokémon Shining Pearl in less than one hour.

A Pokémon Shining Pearl player managed to beat the entire game in just over fifty minutes, a new record for the recently released title. This impressive feat is one of many record-breaking speedruns for games, an accomplishment typically achieved with the help of glitches and clever workarounds.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Pokémon Shining Pearl are two remakes of the classic Nintendo DS games Pokémon Diamond & Pokémon Pearl. These new versions retain most of the content from their 2006 iterations, with a couple of new additions like Ramanas Park, which houses legendary Pokémon. Other quality-of-life changes like an autosave feature and faster leveling have also been introduced. The story and basic gameplay mechanics of the originals are still the main focus, although the remakes feature a completely overhauled art style and some re-recorded music tracks. Because of this, both games had to be rebuilt from the ground up.
With an entirely new game come entirely new glitches, which Youtuber and speedrunner Werster has leveraged to beat Shining Pearl in under an hour. Werster kicks the speedrun off by trying his hardest to skip through the opening cutscene and character creation before grabbing Piplup as his starter Pokémon. He then makes use of a menu glitch to skip over huge chunks of the game, including staples like Shining Pearl’s fishing feature. Werster makes use of this menu glitch and variations of it regularly throughout this speedrun. He also appears to have utilized a glitch that removes attack animations, which saves a lot of time during battles. The speedrun culminates with Werster hilariously skipping past the game’s final boss and cruising to the finish line.

It would take far too long to analyze all of the glitches and techniques that Werster made use of to achieve this new record, but suffice to say that this accomplishment required a deep understanding of the game on a technical level. Shining Pearl can take over thirty hours to complete, so the fact that Werster was able to finish in fifty minutes and thirty-six seconds is undeniably impressive. A blindfolded Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice speedrun video made some waves earlier this year, so a blindfolded Shining Pearl speedrun might be what’s needed to take over Werster’s bragging rights.
For now, Werster is the reigning champ when it comes to Shining Pearl speedruns. While most Pokémon fans would never want to miss out on all the features these games provide, seeing a skilled player trick the game like this is still a treat. Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are still young games, so time will tell if Werster’s record can be beaten.
