Pokemon Signs Deal With Universal Studios to Make A Theme Park

Earlier this year, Nintendo finally opened the doors to Super Nintendo World, a theme park based out in Universal Studios Japan that incorporates attractions revolving around the publisher’s flagship title of Super Mario. And so far, despite the Covid-19 pandemic’s lasting effects, the park has been an overwhelming success. In fact, Nintendo plans to expand it with a Donkey Kong-themed area sometime in 2024 as well as build a version of it out in Orlando, Florida, sometime in 2025.

From the sounds of new information, though, the park will get even bigger a lot sooner, as it seems The Pokemon Company wants in on the action. The company just stated it wants to create brand new ways for fans to experience the Pokemon franchise, and considering the release date of these new plans — and the partner The Pokemon Company chose to execute them with — they will coincide with Super Nintendo World rather than being their own thing.

All that is to say: The Pokemon Company just announced that it entered into a “long-term” deal with Universal Studios Japan to bring Pokemon-themed attractions to the entertainment venue’s parks. Specifically, The Pokemon Company stated that it would be working with Universal to “explore groundbreaking entertainment” options via “innovative technology” that will immerse guests in the world of Pokemon. What’s more, these attractions will appear as early as 2022, much sooner than Nintendo’s other planned expansions.

Unfortunately, The Pokemon Company didn’t provide any specifics on the types of attractions interested parties can expect from its project; its announcement essentially boils down to stating that Super Nintendo World will be receiving a Pokemon-themed area. However, considering these attractions are coming next year, which is only three months away — two years sooner than the earlier announced Donkey Kong expansion — more information about the park should be coming relatively soon, but only time will tell exactly when.

Regardless, whatever The Pokemon Company has planned should be successful. If Super Nintendo World can be a hit with just Mario, then the addition of Pokemon, the biggest entertainment franchise on the planet, should only bolster the park’s experience. Simply put, The Pokemon Company would have to deliberately go out of its way to create something bad enough to drive people away. With that in mind, whatever the new park has in store should be a fun experience for fans of both Nintendo and Pokemon alike.
