Ever since the late 90s, the Pokémon games have been a marvelous source of cosplay inspiration. These games aren’t just filled with creative designs for pocket monsters like Charizard or Scorbunny. No. These games are filled with an imaginative cast of human characters in stylized outfits that range from good, bad, or just plain weird. And nothing highlights this better than the diverse group of gym leaders that bless each game, such as the recent entry on the Nintendo Switch, Pokémon Sword and Shield. Even before Pokémon Sword and Shield hit its release date, gym leaders like Nessa gained a following for her brief, yet, mesmerizing appearance in the ads.

The problem, which commonly happens with any long-running series like Pokémon, is that the gym leaders from the early entries tend to be forgotten or ignored in favor of the newer ones. So, putting Pokémon Sword and Shield aside, this list of cosplayers will focus entirely on the second generation of Pokémon: Pokémon Gold and Silver. 10 Whitney

Known throughout Goldenrod City as “The Incredibly Pretty Girl!,” Whitney is the gym leader of the Goldenrod Gym who specializes in normal type Pokémon. While she may throw a temper tantrum after losing, she is nonetheless a formidable opponent thanks to her strategic use of TM45 (Attract). Cosplayer Midori Phoenix (@midoriphoenix64) did an adorable rendition of Whitney in 2019; embodying the cute spirit of the pink-haired gym leader.

9 Falkner

Falkner, “The Elegant Master of Flying Pokémon,” is the very first gym leader that players will meet in Pokémon Gold and Silver. He’s a handsome gym leader of Violet City, who mastered the flying-type Pokémon of Johto.

SanctusIX (@lexington_deschain), a cosplayer from Mexico, looks amazing as the bird-centric gym leader. Seeing her play with her Rowlet plushies makes this gym leader cosplay all the more precious.

8 Morty

No one can deny the enduring cuteness of Pokémon like Pikachu or Jigglypuff, but one can’t help but admire the supernatural spookiness of ghost Pokémon like Gengar or Dusknoir. Perhaps that’s why Morty, the gym leader of Ecruteak City, decided to become a Pokémon ghost user. Magnitude Cosplay (@magnitudecosplay) did a dashing cosplay of Morty; performing a striking pose that sells the gym leader as “The Mystic Seer of the Future.”

7 Bugsy

Bugsy is exactly what his name implies him to be: a gym leader obsessed with bug-type Pokémon. Because Bugsy’s research of bug-type Pokémon is so renowned, he’s been given the title of “The Walking Bug Pokémon Encyclopedia.” pterodactyl king (@tuttifruttibatz) cosplayed as the gym leader of Azalea Town in early January and looked incredible doing it. The real-life scout outfit looks great on pterodactyl king, but his bugs net is what really completes this killer look.

6 Clair

As “The World’s Best Dragon Master,” Clair is the toughest gym leader to beat in Pokémon Gold and Silver. She has an all-star team of dragon-type Pokémon ready for her at Blackthorn City and knows how to wear a cape in style.

5 Koga

Koga is not only known throughout Johto as the “Poisonous Ninja Master;” he’s also one of the members of the Elite Four. As you may have guessed by his poisonous title, Koga is the master of poison-type Pokémon, such as Venomoth and Muk. Cosplayer Justin did a terrific ninja pose as the poisonous Pokémon master, and looks outstanding thanks to a wonderful costume by EvilQueenCharlotte. 4 Jasmine

Among the many new additions in Pokémon Gold and Silver, steel-type Pokémon was a big one, as it provided a stronger evolution form for Onix called Steelix. Jasmine, better known as the “The Steel-Clad Defense Girl,” put her steel-type Pokémon to good use as the gym leader of Olivine City. Cosplayer Spookachu (@spookachu.x_x) looks stupendous as gym leader Jasmine in her Pokémon cosplay photo; holding a Pokéball in one hand and a toy Ampharos in another. 3 Lance

Lance, the former Elite Four member and Pokémon League Champion, is the strongest dragon-type Pokémon user you’ll face in Pokémon Gold and Silver. He is the only one who has defeated Clair, who is not only “The World’s Best Dragon Master” but also his cousin.

Lance_cosplay (@lance_cosplay), as you may have guessed by the name, dressed himself up magnificently as the highly-skilled Pokémon trainer Lance in this dramatic shot.

2 Misty

While Misty is remembered as an old-school gym leader for the Kanto region, she receives a whole new look for her Pokémon Gold and Silver debut. Like many of the returning Kanto gym leaders, Misty’s water-based Pokémon team is much harder to defeat here than in the first game. Cosplayer Kylie Michelle Briggs is absolutely breathtaking as the new and improved Misty in this photo shot at Anime Expo 2013. She delivers an amazingly cute smile while posing with a little Quagsire in her hand. Ben Rogers Photography was responsible for the shot.

1 Karen

Another new breed of Pokémon introduced in Pokémon Gold and Silver were the dark-type Pokémon, such as Umbreon and Murkrow. Karen, the final member of the Elite Four, loves dark-type Pokémon for their tough and wild imagery. Rika Natsume (xRika89x) gives off a wild attitude in her remarkable cosplay of Karen. LarsVanDrake handled the photography. Both the skill of the cosplayer and the photographer are apparent.
