Though 2020 has been an interesting year for Pokemon, the franchise has seen a lot of attention specifically at the end of the year, with new events in games like Pokemon Masters, and a flurry of rumors as to what the franchise’s 25th anniversary in 2021 could hold in store. Pokemon Sword and Shield on the Nintendo Switch also took an interesting turn this year with the release of the series’ first ever DLC expansions, The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra.

Another surprise that hit fans was the announcement made a few days ago for a special New Year’s livestream from the Japanese Kibo Space Module at the International Space Station. While fans were only told to expect appearances of Pokemon live from space, no other details were revealed, and as the event has come and gone, it did hold one more surprise for Pokemon fans.

During the Space Sunrise Live 2021 event today, along with special augmented reality appearances by Rayquaza and Pikachu straight from space in real-time, it was announced that a special Pikachu would be distributed to players of Pokemon Sword and Shield. Despite being part of a Japanese event, the special Pikachu can be obtained by all players via the internet through Mystery Gift.

This event Pikachu can be obtained from the Mystery Gift menu option starting now until January 15. The Pikachu’s original trainer is listed as KIBO, named after the Japanese Space Module, and knows the moves Thunderbolt, Swift, Wish, and Celebrate, and also holds the valuable Comet Shard item. While Pikachu can normally learn Thunderbolt and Swift, Wish is one move which it normally cannot learn. Pikachu also is typically only seen with the move Celebrate when it comes to events such as this, and although the move had more functionality as a Z-Move in Pokemon Sun and Moon, it does not do anything more than congratulate the player character when used in Pokemon Sword and Shield.

Despite rumors and speculation that the Space Sunrise 2021 event could possibly include news on something like Pokemon Diamond and Pearl remakes, fans certainly had no clue what to expect. However, seeing Pokemon appear in space is always fun, and this special commemorative Pikachu is a nice little takeaway for the end of the year.

Though some also thought that the event could be used to kick off Pokemon’s 25th anniversary, the franchise’s presence during the livestream from space was brief. Despite this, a 25th anniversary celebration for Pokemon has been announced, so fans should still expect even more surprises to come in 2021.
