Game Freak’s big Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield announcement has come through. And it’s a big announcement in more ways than one. Today’s reveal focuses on Pokemon Sword and Shield’s Gigantamax forms, an upgraded type of Dynamax that features unique models for specific Pokemon. Today Game Freak unveiled the Gigantamax forms of 5 different Pokemon, including fan-favorites Pikachu, Eevee, and Charizard.

The Gigantamax forms are unique, different in small and large ways compared to each Pokemon’s normal form. They’re also, as the name implies, humongous. The 5 Pokemon with newly revealed Gigantamax forms are Pikachu, Eevee, Charizard, Butterfree, and Meowth, and each of them is special in their own way. They also each have a unique ability specific to their Gigantamax form, not unlike a Mega Evolution. And also, 3 of these Pokemon have one other unique aspect, which is ways to earn them outside of in-game.

First, let’s introduce each Gigantamax Pokemon. Gigantimax Pikachu is a throwback to the original pixelated Pikachu of Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow, in that they’re a rounded-out rotund Pikachu. Gigantimax Pikachu uses G-Max Volt Crash and paralyzes all opponents. Gigantamax Eevee is super fluffy and uses G-Max Cuddle, causing opposite-gender opponents to become infatuated. Gigantamax Charizard has fiery wings and uses G-Max Wildfire Fire to cause damage for four turns to non-Fire-types. Gigantamax Butterfree has massive wings and uses G-Max Befuddle to cause Poison, Paralysis or Sleep status. Finally, Gigantamax Meowth is a literal long-cat and uses G-Max Gold Rush to confuse all targets and earn an in-game cash bonus.

The three Pokemon that can be earned through incentives are Pikachu, Eevee, and Meowth. Pikachu can be earned by using Play Records from Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! Eevee can be earned in a similar way through Pokemon: Let’s Go, Eevee! Meowth is a simple early purchase bonus and will be available to all players as a gift through January 15. It’s unclear if these three Gigantamax Pokemon will be available through normal gameplay, too, but it’s likely so.

These 5 new Gigantamax Pokemon are the first with the new form in Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, of course. Previously confirmed Gigantamax Pokemon include Corviknight, who grows giant wings tinged with red streaks, Drawnaw, who grows into a bipedal kaiju, and Alcremie, who grows into a huge 4-layer cake. Game Freak is clearly having a lot of fun being creative with these Gigantamax forms, in ways that Mega Evolution wasn’t able to. Expect more Gigantamax forms to be revealed before Pokemon Sword and Shield’s launch.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield release November 15 exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
