Pokemon Sword and Shield How to Evolve Tangela into Tangrowth

Pokemon Sword and Shield’s first expansion, The Isle of Armor, has reintroduced a ton of old Pokemon back into the fold much to the delight of fans. Many of these Pokemon, however, have interesting methods of evolving them that has given some players trouble. This is true for Tangela’s evolution into Tangrowth.

Tangrowth has a unique evolution requirement that sets it apart from other Pokemon in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Rather than just evolving after Tangela hits a certain level, the player will need to teach Tangela Ancient Power and then level it up. Doing this will cause the Pokemon to evolve into a Tangrowth, at which point the move can be forgotten if desired.

Tangrowth has always had this evolution method, so this case is somewhat different from how to get a Magnezone in Pokemon Sword and Shield, which has changed from its usual method. Nonetheless, getting Ancient Power for a Tangela can be a little bit tricky.

As previously stated, in order to evolve a Tangela into a Tangrowth, the player will need to teach the Pokemon Ancient Power. It seems that Tangela learns Ancient Power from leveling up, meaning players can evolve this Pokemon by simply being patient. Bulbapedia shows that Tangela learns Ancient Power at level 24, although in previous games it was in the early 30’s that the Pokemon learned it. Either way, players wanting to get this sooner could attempt to find a Move Tutor and learn the move early.

Finally, if going through the trouble of evolving a Tangela into a Tangrowth is simply too much, the evolved variant wanders the Isle of Armor with relative frequency and can simply be caught outright. Tangrowth’s increased stats make it well worth obtaining when compared to a Tangela, so one of these options is likely the best bet. It hasn’t been confirmed, but theoretically an Ancient Power TM would work to teach Tangela the move even sooner, but no one has found one yet.

Tangrowth can certainly prove to be a valuable addition to a team, as its high Defense, HP and Physical and Special Attack stats ensure that it can take a hit while still dealing some heavy damage. This, paired with the defensive nature of grass type attacks such as Leech Seed or Giga Drain, make defeating a Tangrowth difficult.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is available now for Nintendo Switch.
