Pokemon Sword and Shield How to Evolve Yamask to Runerigus

In Pokemon Sword and Shield, trainers get to meet dozens of familiar faces from prior generations. But some of these old friends have form changes and can evolve into an entirely new Pokemon courtesy of the Galar region. One of these returning faces, Yamask, has a spooky new evolution that can only be obtained by catching its regional variant.

Yamask was first featured in Generation V as part of the Unova region and had to be traded, transferred, or bred into future games of the series. Pokemon Sword and Shield is the first entry since its introduction that allows players to naturally capture the ghost-type Pokemon, with a twist.

Galarian Yamask trades out the mask it usually holds for a stone carving, cursed with power that has taken over Yamask and caused it to take on a dual Ghost/Ground-typing. Evolving a Galarian Yamask will transform it into Runerigus, a stone being held together by shadowy tendrils after Yamask was fully consumed by the stone’s influence. To evolve into Runerigus, however, trainers in both Pokemon versions will have to do something never before done in Pokemon games.

Catching Galarian Yamask

First, trainers will need to head over to Route 6 in order to catch Galarian Yamask. Stow-on-Side is the closest town to Route 6, so fly or use other methods to travel there. Once at Route 6, Yamask can be seen in the Overworld map and encountered at a 35-percent chance, meaning it should only take a few tries to find one. Note that Yamask and other Pokemon in the area will range from Level 29 to 33, so have appropriate or higher level Pokemon on hand.

Evolving into Runerigus

After catching Galarian Yamask, it needs to have sustained 49 or more points of damage. Once or even before this is done, trainers should head over to the Dusty Bowl section of the Wild Area. After arriving, Yamask will evolve into Runefrigus once the player walks under the stone structure in Dusty Bowl and it has the necessary HP damage.

Once evolved, Runefrigus will enjoy immediate benefits including its new appearance, increased stats, and access to moves Yamask can’t learn, such as Shadow Claw. Furthermore, Runerigus and Galarian Yamask are the only Pokemon with the ability Wandering Spirit, which switches abilities between it and the enemy if hit with a direct contact move. In the end, evolving Galarian Yamask into Runerigus brings a new method for the Pokemon series which continues to innovate how trainers can catch them all.

Pokemon Sword and Shield is out now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
