Pokemon Sword and Shield How to Find and Evolve Lotad

Pokemon Sword and Shield are filled with many different Pokemon of many different types for players to find and catch. While many are original to the games based in the Galar region, others were introduced in previous games, such as Lotad.

Lotad is a dual Water and Grass-type Pokemon capable of evolving twice. It was one of the Pokemon that wasn’t left behind for Pokemon Sword and Shield’s release and can be obtained alongside the rest of its evolutionary line.

While Lotad can be caught and encountered in Pokemon Shield, it can only be obtained in Pokemon Sword by trading it over from another game. The same goes for Lotad’s evolutions, Lombre and Ludicolo.

Lotad can be found as a random tall grass encounter on Route 2 while across the lake, Rolling Fields, and Dappled Grove. It can also be found as a visible encounter at West Lake Axewell. Players can also encounter Lotad as a Pokemon raid boss at Bridge Field (den directly west of the water), Dappled Grove (southern-most den), and Stony Wilderness (den with patch of dirt west to it and two patches of grass south of it). It cannot be found on the Isle of Armor or Crown Tundra.

In order to evolve Lotad into Lombre, players just need to level Lotad up to level 14. If players catch one past this level, it will evolve the next time it levels up. Evolving Lombre into Ludicolo is a different story, however. This evolution requires players to use a Water Stone on Lombre. Water Stones can be found once on Route 2 and Bridge Field and found multiple times at the Lake of Outrage and by using the Digging Duo at Bridge Field.

Lombre can also be found in the wild in Pokemon Shield. It can be found as a random tall grass encounter on Route 5, Giant’s Cap, and Giant’s Seat. Players can also find it as a visible encounter at South Lake Miloch, Dappled Grove, and Giant’s Seat. Lombre can also appear as a raid boss in the same locations as Lotad. Ludicolo also has the chance to appear as a raid boss in these places.

With all three Pokemon in the Lotad evolutionary line sharing the same dual type of Water and Grass, they all share the same weaknesses. This means that Lotad, Lombre, and Ludicolo are all weak to Flying, Poison, and Bug-type moves. This also means that they are all resistant to Ground, Steel, and Water-type moves.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield are now available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
