Pokemon Sword and Shield How To Find Max Raid Battles

Last week, fans got an in-depth look at Pokemon Sword and Shield, the next major game in the massive popular franchise. Because of that, the game didn’t have a big presence during Nintendo’s E3 2019 Direct, though new information was presented during a featured demo on Nintendo Treehouse Live. Part of the gameplay was centered on the new Dynamax system and 4 player raids.

For players who are connected and online, they’ll be able to see other players inside of the Wild Area zones in Pokemon Sword and Shield. Being online connected also enables Max Raid Battles, which can be seen as red columns of light shooting into the sky. As designers describe it, these red lights represent the energy coming from the Pokemon den.

As players approach these red beams of light, a Max Raid Battle is triggered against a Dynamax Pokemon. A ready screen appears, giving all four players a minute to prepare for the challenging fight. From this screen, the Pokemon being used can be switched from their party or box and each player can see everyone’s picks as well as a shadow of the Pokemon they’re about to fight and the type it represents. It also gives additional information such as the weather and win conditions.

From there, each player takes a turn going, though the team of players will want to be a bit strategic about the battle using support skills as well as offensive attacks to make sure the team can stay alive against the stronger than normal enemy. It’s also worth noting that the team has access to 1 dynamax move and once it’s used, the ability is gone for the rest of the match. With the enemy defeated, the team earns rewards as well as an an opportunity to catch the dynamax raid Pokemon.

With a few months left before its global release, fans can certainly expect to see more on this title, including another rumored Nintendo Direct coming sometime in August. With over 800 Pokemon already available through past entries, there’s a lot more details to learn including which pocket monsters are making the cut alongside some of the new additions like Corviknight, Wooloo, and the three starters.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield launch on November 15, 2019 exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
