Pokemon Sword and Shield How to Get Mew

Compared to the previous generations of Pokemon games, Pokemon Sword and Shield are a little light on Pokemon of the Mythical and Legendary varieties. Aside from the games’ mascots, Zacian and Zamazenta, there aren’t that many epic-grade creatures that stand leagues above the more modest Pokemon players first encounter in Sword and Shield.

That may be a tough pill to swallow for fans who find particular enjoyment in having their young Pokemon trainers go up against mythological creatures, extradimensional beings, and even the Pokemon equivalent of gods with just a well-trained team of pocket monsters. Luckily, players won’t have to settle for just Pokemon Sword and Shield’s few new Legendaries, because it’s also possible to add one of the original Mythical Pokemon, Mew, to the games with a little know-how.

First off, let’s make it clear that players will have to pay for a little more than the games themselves to get their hands on the mysterious little Psychic type, because Mew’s inclusion in the games is dependent on the Pokeball Plus. For those who forget, the Pokeball Plus is a Nintendo Switch accessory that was released alongside Pokemon Let’s Go Pikachu and Let’s Go Eevee last year, where it could be used like a Joy-Con to control trainers and capture Pokemon.

That functionality doesn’t come into play in Sword and Shield. What’s important, though, is that the Pokeball-shaped accessory comes with Mew as an exclusive bonus. This was originally included so Pokemon Let’s Go players could bring it into those games, but they can also do it in Sword and Shield as well. To do so, all they have to do is head to the Mystery Gift option in the menu screen. There, they have the option to connect the Pokeball Plus, thus allowing them to download Mew into the games.

Unfortunately, this will only work if players haven’t already downloaded Mew into Pokemon Let’s Go. If that’s the case, their only options are either buying another Pokeball Plus (which, at $50, probably won’t be practical for some) or wait until the Pokemon Home service launches sometime in 2020 and enables them to transfer Pokemon between the Let’s Go games and Sword and Shield.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available for the Switch.
