The mainline Pokemon series has made revived fossils a staple since giving players the option between a Helix Fossil and Dome Fossil in Pokemon Red and Green. While Pokemon Sword and Shield continue this tradition, they shake things up by offering four new Pokemon that can be created by combining smaller fossils obtained via a pair of NPCs known as the Digging Duo.

Found near the daycare building in the Wild Area, the Digging Duo offers to dig up rare items in exchange for Sword and Shield’s secondary currency, Watts. In Pokemon Sword it’s easier to get Fossilized Birds and Dinos, while in Pokemon Shield it’s easier to get Fossilized Drakes and Fish. A Reddit user named zomglookup has gone through the effort of digging up 3,136 items with the “skill-focused” member of the duo to figure out just how common these items are.

In their post to the r/PokemonSwordAndShield subreddit Friday, zomglookup posted the results: Bird and Dino fossils each had around a 7 percent chance to appear, while the Drake and Fish Fossils were closer to 1 percent — unfortunate for Sword players who want to use Dracovish on their competitive teams. That said it can be assumed Shield players will have similar odds with the fossil types reversed; everyone has a 22 percent chance to obtain the poorly named Rare Bone and a paltry 0.03 percent chance to get a Gold Bottle Cap.

Of course, zomglookup’s results are only indicative of one player in one study, so it’s likely the odds they came to aren’t exact. Yet with such a huge sample size they’re probably close, which makes this a good chart to keep on-hand when looking to gather items post-game for breeding and battling.

Using the Digging Duo and obtaining something like a competitively-viable Dracovish is a notable option for Pokemon players who are waiting for the Isle of Armor DLC expansion to release. More was unveiled about what the new Wild Area coming with this first batch of the DLC will contain during a Nintendo Direct Mini last month.

There are also other Pokemon games available to offer fans something to do in the meantime. Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Niantic’s mobile game Pokemon GO has content planned throughout April that will be adjusted to make things easier for players stuck at home.
