Pokemon Sword and Shield Player Spends 60 Hours Trying to Catch One Pokemon

By and large, the Pokemon RPGs, Pokemon Sword and Shield included, are well known for being pretty laid-back experiences, being rather easy and short by most RPG standards so as to enable more players to have a fun time wandering around and building up their Pokemon team. That said, there are certain elements of the games that can eat up a player’s time and test their endurance in ways few games can.

This week, Reddit user theboyzz0111 reminded us of this fact with their tale of trying to catch the most elusive prey in Sword and Shield: a Shiny Pokemon. These ultra-rare variations of regular Pokemon, with their unique color schemes and 1/4096 chance of being encountered, are among the most valuable Pokemon one can attain, if only for the bragging rights of having encountered caught such a special creature.

Given how rare they are, it’s no surprise that determined players can spend dozens of hours just trying to encounter a Shiny Pokemon in the wild, or searching for any exploit that can help them find Shinies faster. But what makes theboyzz0111’s Shiny hunt (which ended with them catching a Shiny Wooloo) so notable is that they kept it contained exclusively to the very first area one can encounter Shinies in Sword and Shield, Route 1.

As they explained on Reddit, “I couldn’t start the game without a shiny starter (yes I’m obsessed).” And since Sword and Shield’s starter Pokemon can’t be Shiny under normal circumstances (it is possible to breed Shiny versions, though), they had no choice but to wander around Route 1 in the hopes of encountering one from among the Pokemon available there.

According to their estimates, they spent around 67 hours doing this and encountered about 6,000 Pokemon. By that point, they could’ve easily played the game normally, cleared the Galar region Pokemon League, filled out the entire regional Pokedex, and unlocked the Shiny Charm item that greatly increases the odds of a Shiny encounter. But theboyzz0111 persisted regardless in getting the Shiny hunt out of the way first, and eventually their persistence was finally rewarded.

At long last, they were ready to take on Pokemon Sword and Shield, complete with a full team of level 30-40 Pokemon. Later, theboyzz0111 wrote that they got to the fourth gym and are loving the game so far. What’s more, they managed to add two more Shinies to the team by breeding a Shiny Scorbunny and a Shiny Yamper along the way, though it took over 300 attempts for each. Old habits die hard, apparently.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available on the Switch.
