On Thursday, January 9, Game Freak officially revealed the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass, which will bring two major content updates, The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra, to the games over the course of 2020. While the first of these DLCs will not release until June, the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Pass is already available for pre-order, and there are two things that fans should be aware of when making their purchases.
To start, The Pokemon Company has issued a reminder through the official Pokemon Sword and Shield website indicating that players must purchase the version of the Expansion Pass that corresponds to the game that they actually own. More specifically, players that have a copy of Pokemon Sword should be certain to buy the Pokemon Sword Expansion Pass, while those with Pokemon Shield will need to purchase the Pokemon Shield Expansion Pass.
This will likely not be an issue for most fans, but players that are unaware of the fact that each version of the game has its own unique Expansion Pass may find that they have accidentally purchased the wrong Pokemon Sword and Shield DLC package. This is clearly a situation that The Pokemon Company is looking to minimize, and the company has even issued a handy graphic illustrating the point.
Additionally, players should know that while the Pokemon Sword and Shield Expansion Passes can be purchased separately for $29.99 each, they are also being offered in bundles with the base games for $99.99 each. Again, this is something that fans should be cognizant of when making their purchases, as to avoid paying for the base games all over again, and the Nintendo Customer Support Twitter account recently pointed this out, suggesting that some players may have already missed this detail.
In short, fans should simply take an extra moment when buying their Expansion Passes to make sure that they have selected the one that matches the version of Pokemon Sword and Shield that they own, and that they do not accidentally purchase it in a bundle with one of the base games. Indeed, using just a bit of extra care should make it quite straightforward for players to gain access to the new areas, new Pokemon, and more that will be added with Pokemon Sword and Shield’s The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra.
