Pokemon Sword and Shield Reveal Max Raid Challenge With Special Prize

Earlier today, a short Pokemon presentation was held that saw a number of new projects be announced, the most exciting one of all clearly being New Pokemon Snap, the long-awaited follow-up to the original Nintendo 64 game.

Today’s presentation also coincided with the release of the first DLC expansion for Pokemon Sword and Shield, the Isle of Armor. To celebrate the expansion’s release, the games will see a new Max Raid Battle be added.

At the moment, players have the ability to catch 22 different Gigantamax Pokemon as part of an event running through the month of June, but this new event sees only one Pokemon included and it’s possibly one of the series’ rarest: the Mythical Zeraora.

Zeraora is an Electric type that was introduced in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, the last set of games released for the 3DS, but it was only available via a special event, meaning this will be many players’ first opportunity to catch it.

The event begins today and will run until June 28th and sees players working together to battle a Dynamax Zeraora. Players fortunately don’t need to purchase the DLC to access it but will need to download the latest edition of Wild Area News via the Mystery Gift option.

The real prize, however, comes from what may happen after the event ends. The Pokemon Company announced that if at least one million players manage to successfully complete the raid, then everyone will be entitled to a shiny Zeraora. Since Legendary and Mythical Pokemon can’t be bred, this makes this the only time Zeraora can be obtained in its shiny variant.

In related news, it was confirmed today as well that Pokemon GO will be receiving Mega Evolutions, which allow certain Pokemon to temporarily transform into different, stronger forms, though details are scarce at the moment.

As for fans of the Trading Card Game, while no news was shared today, the second of two new bundles is still scheduled to release at the end of the month, with the other available now, which is centered around Copperajah, the Steel type introduced in Sword and Shield.

Pokemon Sword and Shield are available exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
