Game Freak is ready to share more information about Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield. Celebrating the start of the Pokemon World Championships tournament, a new trailer for Pokemon Sword and Shield has been released. The new trailer doesn’t feature any new Pokemon, but it does show off some other features, including new items, new interactions, and more. But perhaps most interest of all is the introduction of Hidden Abilities.

Hidden Abilities will be a familiar concept to Pokemon GO players, where certain Pokemon can have a special ability abnormal to the standard. In Pokemon Sword and Shield, Hidden Abilities will be functionally the same. Rare Pokemon can have a Hidden Ability that replaces one of their standard abilities. According to the official Pokemon Twitter account, the only way to find these rare Pokemon is through Max Raid Battles.

Only one example of a Hidden Ability is shown in the new Pokemon Sword and Shield trailer. That ability being Corviknight’s Mirror Armor, which reflects any stat-lowering effects that target them. These Hidden Abilities won’t be available to all Pokemon, and it isn’t clear how players will know which Pokemon will have a Hidden Ability through gameplay. But Hidden Abilities, for those familiar with them, will certainly offer an additional layer of depth to hunting for the perfect Pokemon.

As if Hidden Abilities weren’t enough randomization, Pokemon Sword and Shield have another layer of it tied to Max Raid Battles. As previously announced, certain Pokemon will be able to grow even beyond Dynamax size. These Gigantimax Pokemon also have a rare chance of being available to battle in Max Raid Battles. Game Freak has also confirmed that some of these Gigantimax Pokemon will also have a Hidden Ability. Now imagine if it’s a shiny version, too.

Max Raid Battles continue to be portrayed as what may be one of Pokemon Sword and Shield’s core endgame systems. While just about anyone will take part in Max Raid Battles from time to time, there’s much more to the system than first meets the eye. Dedicated Pokemon Sword and Shield players will hunt from battle to battle looking for specific Pokemon, hoping that this one might have the Hidden Ability that will bring their Pokemon team composition together perfectly.

There are layers to Pokemon and Sword and Shield that are only just now being revealed by Game Freak. It’s exciting to think about what might come next.

Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield release November 16 exclusively on Nintendo Switch.
