Undertale composer Toby Fox has just announced he will be composing a track for the upcoming and highly anticipated Pokémon Sword and Shield for the Nintendo Switch.

The 28-year-old video game developer and composer, known primarily for his work on the critically acclaimed indie RPG Undertale, broke the news himself on Friday morning via Twitter. He tweeted out that he had been asked to compose a song for the latest Pokémon game and described being asked as “a huge honor”. He hoped fans would enjoy his work once the game officially releases in two weeks. His tweet additionally included a cute hand drawing of a Yamper Pokémon with the humorous epitaph, “In Memoriam – Toby did a song for Pokémon 2019”.

In a reply tweet, the composer also clarified that his song wouldn’t be a “main track”, but that he was still excited to be a part of the game. Fans and followers reacted excitedly to the news, with many speculating that it would be easy to figure out Fox’s song due to his unique and signature music style.

Just a few hours after Fox’s initial tweet, a preview of his song leaked and was posted to Twitter. The tweet garnered thousands of likes and retweets, with many replies from fans praising the track. “It’s got that signature Toby Fox flare without sounding out of place in Pokémon. Honestly good work Toby it’s a fun track,” said one Twitter user.

Though this will be Fox’s first time composing music for a Pokémon game, this is not his first time working with GameFreak, Pokémon’s game developer. Just this year Fox worked on GameFreak’s RPG Little Town Hero, which was released this past month. Fox composed nearly all of the game’s songs, while the music was arranged by veteran Pokémon composer Hitomi Sato.

In addition to his work developing Undertale and follow-up game Deltarune, Fox has also composed music for webcomic Homestuck and its related video game Hiveswap.

Pokémon Sword and Shield will be released for the Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019. Both games are currently available to preload on the Switch now.
