Anyone paying for Nintendo Switch Online will not have access to all of its services with Pokémon Sword & Shield. It has recently been confirmed that both games will not support cloud saves.

One of the benefits of purchasing a Nintendo Switch Online subscription is that saves can be automatically backed up to the cloud. This means that any data will be protected if the player breaks or loses their Nintendo Switch console. It’s also possible to transfer saves to a new Nintendo Switch if the player loses the original or if it’s stolen, as the player can switch their profile to a new system once per year.

The people who purchase Pokémon Sword & Shield will need to take extra care of their save files as Japanese Nintendo has revealed that the games won’t support cloud save functionality. This information comes from the Japanese Nintendo eShop, which has confirmed that the games won’t let the player back up their saves.

The fact that Pokémon Sword & Shield won’t support cloud saves isn’t totally unexpected: the same was also true of the Pokémon: Let’s Go! games. The reason why cloud saves aren’t allowed for the Pokémon titles comes down to cheating. Being able to restore a previous save state could allow players to abuse the trading system in order to receive multiple copies of rarer Pokémon.

It’s still sad that Pokémon Sword & Shield won’t support cloud saves as it means a player’s hard work can be undone in a single accident. The same was also true of the previous Pokémon games, but the technology wasn’t widely available on the earlier Nintendo systems. The ability to automatically back up saves online is one of the biggest incentives for purchasing a Nintendo Switch Online subscription and it’s a shame that Pokémon Sword & Shield won’t be making the most out of this feature, even though the other online modes in the game will require the service.

Pokémon Sword & Shield will be released for Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019.
