Pokémon Sword & Shield currently seem to be causing a rather strange technical issue that revolves around a specific TV: Roku.
Technical difficulties are fairly common in the digital world. Whether the problem pertains to a hardware device, streaming service, movie, or a video game, it can cause inconveniences and issues for users. Small or minor ones can be dealt with easily and quickly, while more serious ones can take a lot of time and effort.
According to some reports on Reddit, playing the latest Pokémon games on certain Roku TV devices will cause them to crash and stop functioning correctly. Specifically, whenever players are searching for other players in-game, the Nintendo Switch sends out a signal that is very similar to the data packets Roku TVs use in order to function. As a result, the TV will crash.
Others have reported that upon booting up their Roku TV, the device will get stuck in a loop between showing the logo and turning off.
Luckily, there is a solution. The same users who initially reported the problems have also stated that setting the Nintendo Switch to Airplane Mode offers a solution, as they were then able to continue their gameplay with no issues. Roku is currently aware of the situation and has stated on Reddit that it is “working diligently to resolve this issue.”
This is not the only technical problem to affect Pokémon Sword & Shield players in recent memory, however. Shortly after the games came out, some players reported that a supposed crash was causing the Nintendo Switch’s SD card to become corrupted. The solution for that particular problem was to back up the data and reformat the SD card.
The chances of either issue happening are rather slim. Users don’t have to worry too much about their Roku TVs crashing if they set the Nintendo Switch to Airplane Mode, while the SD card becoming corrupted can be avoided by reformatting it.
Hopefully, official patches will be rolled out soon enough to fix these issues once and for all.
