Pokémon Sword & Shield Are Still The BestSelling Games In Japan

Pokémania is running wild in its homeland, as Pokémon Sword & Shield are still the best-selling Nintendo Switch games in Japan.

Pokémon Sword & Shield were dogged with controversy since E3 2019 when it was revealed that not all of the Pokémon from the series would make it into the games, nor would Mega Evolutions or Z-Moves be returning. It seems that the controversies did little to affect the enthusiasm for the games, as Pokémon Sword & Shield have sold an incredible amount of copies since launch, with over six million units sold worldwide.

Pokémon Sword & Shield have been the best-selling video games in Japan for 2019 and they haven’t lost any momentum. According to VGChartz, Pokémon Sword & Shield are still the number one games in the Japanese sales charts, even though they were released over a month ago. The entire top ten for the most recent sales period is dominated by Nintendo Switch games, with the exception of Project Sakura Wars in the #2 spot, which was released for the PlayStation 4.

To date, Pokémon Sword & Shield have sold almost two and a half million units in Japan, which are incredible numbers for the region. The games have come close to outselling Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in Japan, which is by far the best-selling Nintendo Switch game internationally. The games are still a million units away from outselling Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but it’s looking increasingly likely that Pokémon Sword & Shield can beat those numbers by the end of the holiday season.

The Nintendo Switch has seen incredible success in Japan over the past few years, to the point where it has outsold the PlayStation 4 in the region. It seems that all Nintendo needed to do to compete with the mobile market was to turn their home console into a portable machine. The fact that the Nintendo Switch has the first home iterations of the mainline Pokémon series has been a huge factor in helping the system to dominate the sales charts in Japan this Holiday season.
