In the past, the Pokémon video games relied on new versions of each game in order to add new content to a particular generation and region, as was the case with games like Pokémon Yellow, Pokémon Crystal, and Pokémon Emerald. Game Freak phased these out over time, but they have been replaced with new content that will be added through DLC.

Pokémon Sword & Shield will be adding new content through its Expansion Pass, in the form of the Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. The Isle of Armor is due to be released this summer and it will add a significant amount of content to the Galar region.

New Location & Characters

The titular Isle of Armor is a location within the Galar region that players will be able to access once the DLC goes live this summer. According to Pokémon Sword & Shield art director James Turner, the Isle of Armor is based on the Isle of Man, in the same way that The Crown Tundra is based on Scotland.

Based on the map revealed so far, the Isle of Armor is East of Spikemuth and it consists of beaches, grassland, and what appears to be a desert and a swamp area. The Isle of Armor will consist of a single huge Wild Area, with a few off-shoot regions.

The most notable location in the Isle of Armor is a dojo that is run by Mustard, the former Champion of the Galar region. Mustard was Leon’s mentor in the past and the player will need to seek his guidance as they explore the island. There are also version-exclusive characters that will appear in the form of trainee Gym Leaders. Pokémon Sword players will encounter a Poison-type trainer named Klara, while Pokémon Shield players will encounter a Psychic-type trainer named Avery. It’s already possible to briefly encounter these characters in Pokémon Sword & Shield at Wedgehurst Station.

New & Returning Pokémon

The player will encounter a Galarian Slowpoke in Wedgehurst Station, but it cannot evolve in Pokémon Sword & Shield. It will be possible to evolve it into Galarian Slowbro by using an item found on the Isle of Armor.

The main storyline in the Isle of Armor will involve a new Legendary Pokémon called Kubfu, which will be given to the player by Mustard. Kubfu is a Fighting-type Pokémon, but the player will be expected to train it until it evolves into an Urshifu. The player will need to take Kubfu to either the Tower of Darkness or the Tower of Waters in order to evolve it. The choice of tower will determine Urshifu’s secondary-type, as it will learn the Single Strike Style and become part Dark-type in the Tower of Darkness, or it will learn the Rapid Strike Style and become part Water-type in the Tower of Waters.

There are also a number of Pokémon from the older games that will be returning in the Isle of Armor update and they will also be available in Pokémon Sword & Shield to those who don’t purchase the Expansion Pass. These Pokémon include Azumarill, Blissey, Chansey, Dedenne, Fletchling, Fletchinder, Happiny, Horsea, Golduck, Kingdra, Larvesta, Lycanroc, Magnemite, Magneton, Magnezone, Marill, Psyduck, Rockruff, Seadra, Slowbro, Talonflame, Volcarona, Zorua, and Zoroark.

New Gigantamax Forms

The Isle of Armor is also adding new Gigantamax forms for Pokémon. Urshifu is the only Pokémon that has multiple Gigantamax forms, but these are tied to which of the two combat styles it has mastered throughout the game.

The player can also give Pokémon the ability to achieve their Gigantamax form through some unknown means. It will be possible for the final evolutions of the player’s starter Pokémon to transform into their new Gigantamax form. This means that Cinderace, Inteleon, and Rillaboom will gain Gigantamax forms with their own G-Max moves. Cinderace has access to G-Max Fireball, Inteleon has access to G-Max Hydrosnipe, and Rillaboom has access to G-Max Drum Solo. These three G-Max moves share the same effect, as they are unaffected by enemy abilities.

New Items, Clothing & Restricted Sparring

The Isle of Armor expansion is adding a number of new clothing options for the player to use for their character, as well as new gear that can alter the appearance of their bike. The people who pre-purchase the Expansion Pass can access Leon’s cap, shirt, and tights right now.

The Apricorns from the Johto region will be making their long-awaited return to the series. These are fruit that can be turned into different kinds of Poké Balls. It has also been confirmed that new Move Tutors can be encountered in the Isle of Armor.

One of the most interesting new features in the Isle of Armor expansion is Restricted Sparring. This will limit the types of Pokémon that the player can bring into battle, which offers all kinds of interesting ideas for strategy and imposing new challenges on hardcore players.
