Pokémon Sword & Shield Hosts Shiny Wailord Raid Event

A limited time raid event is taking place in Pokemon Sword And Shield and it gives players an increased chance to find a shiny Wailord. Players will have from now until July 19 to battle various water-type Pokémon in raid battles, along with increased odds to encounter a giant purple whale.

Shiny Pokémon are incredibly rare specimens in which players have a .02% chance of encountering under normal circumstances. Players can increase these odds through various hunting methods, or by obtaining a shiny charm. One such method is by knocking out 500 of the same type of Pokémon which then raises a player’s odds to .14%. Certain trainers have donned the title “Shiny Hunter” and will endure several thousand encounters in search of a shiny Pokemon.

The Pokémon Company announced via blog post that a new raid event is taking place until July 19. This event features an increased encounter rate for water-type Pokémon in all raids but also increases the odds of finding a shiny Wailord in max raids. Max raids are raids that are rated five stars. Wailords that appear in max raids during this event have an astounding 2% chance of being shiny. While these odds sounds too good to be true, finding a shiny Wailord is not the hard part of this event.

In max raids, players only have one shot to catch the Pokémon once it’s defeated. Defeating a max raid Pokémon requires an entire squad of high-level Pokémon that have a good type advantage over the max raid Pokémon. Once the player has defeated a max raid Pokémon, they will only have one chance to catch the Pokémon before it runs away, never to be seen again. Max raid Pokémon also have a low chance of being caught, and the percent chance of catching a Pokémon in a raid goes down even more when battling in someone else’s raid.

Nevertheless, players have a three-day window in which they can easily find a shiny Wailord. While the odds for catching one may seem stacked against the player, a 1-in-50 chance of encountering a shiny Wailord should give players quite a few opportunities. The Pokémon Sword and Shield raid event should allow the player to catch a pod of purple whales. Train them up as your personal aquatic army, or use them as trade fodder to get something better. But hurry, there is only a limited time before they are culled back to their normal shiny rate of 1 in 4096.
