Pokémon Diamond & Pearl introduced Combee and Vespiquen to the series. If the player never went out of their way to catch a Vespiquen, then they wouldn’t get to experience its might on the battlefield until they reached Aaron of the Sinnoh Elite Four. Aaron’s Vespiquen was a beast on the battlefield and many a trainer had to work hard to overcome its signature moves.

Combee and Vespiquen made the cut for Pokémon Sword & Shield, but new players might not be aware of the special requirements for evolving the former Pokémon into the latter. As such, TheGamer has created this helpful guide for those looking to add some insect royalty to their Pokémon team.

Where To Catch Combee?

Combee can be found in the Rolling Fields part of the Wild Area. It’s a visible encounter, which means that the player can see them buzzing around on the overworld. Combee has a 60% chance of appearing when the weather is sunny, but it won’t appear during other weather types.

The Rolling Fields can be found just north of the meetup spot in the southern part of the Wild Area. It’s near where the player first enters the Wild Area, so it’s not that difficult for players to encounter a Combee.

If the player wants a Vespiquen, then it’s vitally important that they catch a female Combee, as male Combee cannot evolve. The main visual difference between male and female Combee is that the female has a red triangle on the forehead of the lowest of the three faces.

Once the player has caught/hatched a female Combee, they need to train it until it hits level 21, at which point it can evolve into a Vespiquen.

The Best Moves For Vespiquen

In the older Pokémon games, Vespiquen had exclusive access to three signature moves – Attack Order, Defend Order, and Heal Order. For whatever reason, Game Freak decided to not include Heal Order in Pokémon Sword & Shield, so it cannot be used in the Galar region as of the time of writing. This might change when the Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra DLC are released.

The loss of Heal Order is a crippling blow to Vespiquen, as it was the one thing keeping it safe from the ever-present horror of Stealth Rock. Vespiquen’s X4 weakness to Stealth Rock is a huge detriment to its competitive viability. Vespiquen might be fun for blitzing through the single-player mode in Pokémon Sword & Shield, but its unique moves won’t keep it active for long in online competitive battles.

Pokémon Sword & Shield are available now for Nintendo Switch.
