According to Cottonee’s Pokedex entry in Pokémon Sword & Shield, it can be sent flying to the other side of the world if it gets caught up in hurricane-strength winds, and that just about sums it up. Its evolution, Whimsicott, is a lot more impressive — not to mention more fluffy.

If your team isn’t complete without a Cottonee or Whimsicott, here are your best chances of finding one in Sword & Shield.

Where to Find Cottonee

Cottonee can only be found in Stony Wilderness during overcast weather as an overworld encounter. While it isn’t as rare as some other Pokémon, the fact that it can only found in one location during a specific weather condition makes Cottonee a little harder to find than others.

If you don’t fancy your chances of encountering a Cottonee in the wild, you can also trade a Minccino to an NPC in Hulbury for one. The NPC is located down the stairs below the Pokémon Center and can be found sitting on a bench by herself. Hand over your Minccino, and she’ll give you a Cottonee, easy peasy.

Another way to get Cottonee is through Max Raid Battles in Stony Wilderness, Bridge Field, Dappled Grove, and Giant’s Mirror.

Evolving Cottonee to Whimsicott

Thankfully, the process of evolving Cottonee into Whimsicott is relatively simple. All you need is a Sun Stone. If you don’t have one, you can find one in the Wild Area. Just head to the Dusty Bowl section to find one south of Hammerlocke. Otherwise, you can find one around Lake of Outrage if you have the second Rotom Bike.

Once you have a Sun Stone, you can evolve Cottonee with it, no leveling or other special steps required.

How To Use Whimsicott

Beyond being cute, Whimsicott is great for doing damage over time. Maxing HP or Defense is therefore recommended. Not only that, but Whimsicott’s prankster ability is extremely helpful, as it increases the priority of a status move.

Leech Seed, Substitute, and Encore allow Whimsicott to set the stage for the rest of the team, so putting it in the lead of a team of Pokémon that aren’t very good at DPS can be the difference between a win and a lose. Leech Seed is also effective against almost every type, with the exceptions being Grass and Dark types, so it can be extremely handy to have. You can also pair Leech Seed with Substitute or Protect, as it’ll increase Whimsicott’s time on the field, as well as its chances of timing out your opponent’s Dynamax.

Though Cottonee doesn’t have too much to offer, Whimsicott is a great addition to any team.
