If you just can’t imagine finishing a Pokémon game without Cubchoo and its evolution, Beartic, here’s how to find and evolve Cubchoo in Pokémon Sword & Shield.

Where to Find Cubchoo

Cubchoo is a fairly common overworld encounter in both versions of the game. It can be found on Route 10, the Bridge Field, Dusty Bowl, Giant’s Mirror, Hammerlocke Hills, and the Stony Wilderness. Your best chances of encountering Cubchoo are in the Dusty Bowl, Giant’s Mirror, and Stony Wilderness during hail (50%). Generally speaking, if it’s hailing, you’re probably going to run into a Cubchoo. It is also easily found during windy conditions.

What’s interesting is that Beartic is also an overworld encounter. While not as common as Cubchoo, it has a 10% rate of spawning in the overworld on Route 10 in both Sword and Shield, along with many other Ice-types. If you’re running around in the wild grass, your chances of encountering a Beartic jump to 30%, making it a fairly easy find.

Evolving Cubchoo into Beartic

Cubchoo evolves into Beartic at level 37. Nothing much to it: just take your baby bear into battle, feed it plenty of rare candies, and watch it go!

How to Use Cubchoo and Beartic

Thanks to its high Attack and Special Attack stats, Cubchoo is very usable even before evolving. A Cubchoo with Snow Cloak greatly benefits from having Hail active on the battlefield—Snow Cloak multiplies a Pokémon’s evasiveness by 1.25. While its Defense stat is poor, Snow Cloak should let Cubchoo dodge-tank and make use of its Special Attack with Blizzard.

Beartic shines as the bulkiest Ice-type currently released, alongside Piloswine. This, combined with its high Attack, makes it a good buffer for teams lacking the power to challenge high defense Pokémon. Bulk Up adds onto Beartic’s natural tankiness, and combining that with Icicle Crash allows Beartic to juggle defense and DPS as needed.

While these strategies won’t eliminate the usual threats to Ice-type Pokémon, it’ll give Cubchoo and Beartic a lot more breathing room and a chance to do some serious damage before being taken off the field.
