Pokemon Sword & Shield How To Find & Evolve Rolycoly Into Coalossal

Out of all Pokémon, it’s often Rock-types that get overlooked because let’s be real, Probopass isn’t exactly cute and cuddly. That isn’t to say they don’t have a certain charm of their own, but they also have the highest amount of disadvantages out of all the types, which makes them difficult to place into a team. However, Pokémon: Sword and Shield has introduced a game changer in the form of Rolycoly. As a dual Fire/Rock-type (once evolved), this makes it able to hold its own against several of the typical weaknesses a Rock-type Pokémon faces, including Ice, Steel and Grass-types.

So whether you’re looking for a viable rock-type pokemon, or are just looking for a Fire-type Pokemon not named Charizard, here’s how to find (and evolve) Rolycoly.

Rolycoly typically begin life in the Galar coal mines. According to lore, the resources it spawns made it popular to keep in homes before people in the region had electricity. Since the mines are on the required roadmap of your journey, you’ll have no issues finding and catching this Pokémon. In fact, you’ll probably run into more than you want to there. Just watch out for its wandering middle form Carkol inside, as they tend to camouflage in with the mines rolling carts. You most likely won’t be experienced enough to catch or battle one yet at that point, so avoid a run-in if you can help it.

If you’re postgame and just seeking to fill the Pokédex, Rolycoly can also be found in the wild area during sunny weather in Giants Cap and Motostoke Riverbank.

This Pokémon changes into Carkol at level eighteen and then Coalossal at level thirty-four. It’s a very easy process compared to the requirements for past Rock-types such as Golem and Rhyperior, both of whom are trade to evolve (the latter requiring an item as well).

You’ll want to train up your Rolycoly right away since he’s just a regular Rock-type before evolving. As a Carkol, it learns more Fire-type moves on its own than it does as a Coalossal, so it’s probably best to hold off on evolving it for a little while. This will be worth your patience, as Coalossal has a signature move called Tar Shot that strengthens damage done to opponents by fire attacks.

As one of the Galar species with a special Gigantamax form, Coalossal with this ability are only found in raids in Giants Cap in Sword. Shield players will have to trade or join up with a Sword players raid. Its signature attack is the rock-type G-Max Volcalith, which it can use as long as it has knows any heavy damage dealing Rock-type move. With the unique ability Steam Engine, this line gets increased speed when hit by a Fire-type or Water-Type move.

Since Carkol can learn the powerful move Burn Up at level fifty-five, Incinerate at level twenty-seven, and gets Flame Charge right away upon evolving, don’t worry too much about teaching it useable fire-type moves. Incinerate can hold you over in battles until you teach it the stronger Flamethrower down the line. You can buy it from any Watt trader for 5,000 watts. This line doesn’t learn a lot of fantastic rock attacks on its own so that’s what you’ll want to focus on as far as moves go. A classic would be Stone Edge which is a damage dealing move with a high chance of making a critical hit. You can buy it for 8,000 watts or find it as a random drop in raids. Another great addition would be Rock Slide, which can be found as a TM on Route 9.
