UPDATE: Nintendo of Canada reports that Pokémon Sword and Shield had the highest-grossing launch of any Pokémon game in Canada.
Pokémon Sword & Shield have had the best opening week of any Nintendo Switch games to date with over six million copies sold since November 15. The duo of titles are the first mainline Pokémon games to appear on a home console and there was, initially, a lot of enthusiasm leading up to their release. That enthusiasm slowly withered away on social media following the announcement of the removal of the National Dex at E3 2019. This was followed by a number of other reveals concerning cut content and the shoddy nature of some of the new features.
Eventually, fans started a vocal movement to boycott Pokémon Sword & Shield due to these cuts, but it doesn’t seem to have left much of a mark. The results are in and Pokémon Sword & Shield’s first week has pulled in incredible numbers. The titles have quickly risen the charts in both Japan and the UK.
According to the official Twitter account of The Pokémon Company, Pokémon Sword & Shield have sold over six million units within the space of seven days, making them the fastest-selling Nintendo Switch games to date.
These new sales numbers have instantly put Sword & Shield into the top ten best-selling Nintendo Switch games of all time, entering at number 8 and pushing The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening out of the listing. There’s still a way to before cracking the top spot, as both need to beat the 11.28 million sales of the Let’s Go games, the 14.54 million of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the 15.28 million of Super Mario Odyssey, the 15.71 million of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the whopping 19.01 million of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
The best-selling Nintendo Switch game has been Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for a while now, but it feels as if Pokémon Sword & Shield have the potential to dethrone it. These strong initial numbers will be further bolstered as we head into the 2019 holiday season, where the Nintendo Switch is predicted to come out on top. Pokémon Sword & Shield have their issues, but plenty of fans have been willing to overlook them as they enjoy their first Pokémon experience on a home console.
It’s been a long time coming, but the wait appears to have been worth it.
