A trainer has finally completed the monotonous task of encountering a shiny Pokémon while cooking curry at Pokémon Camp in Pokémon Sword & Shield. Shiny Pokémon can be found using different encountering methods in Pokémon Sword & Shield, but Pokémon Camp was thought to be an impossible method until now.

Pokémon Sword & Shield were released in November of 2019 taking the Pokémon games into the 8th generation. The new generation featured a new mode called Pokémon Camp in which trainers can play with their pocket monsters and cook different kinds of curry. Trainers could try to cook all 151 different types of curry to complete their Curry Dex, or they could feed and play with their Pokémon to increase their friendship level. Pokémon Camp also offered unique random encounters after cooking curry where a creature would be drawn to the smell and the trainer would have the option to freely add it to their team.

It was always suspected that a Pokémon could appear shiny during a Pokémon Camp encounter, but data miners were unable to find a specific shiny table for these encounters which deterred even the most avid of shiny hunters. However, one brave soul armed with 10 Nintendo Switches took the daunting task of proving the existence of Pokémon Camp shinies. Japanese YouTuber Kenzo Suzuki posted a video of himself shiny hunting using the curry cooking method on ten Nintendo Switch systems simultaneously, and after an imaginably high number of encounters, a shiny Hattrem appeared proving shiny Pokémon can appear in Pokémon Camp.

There is still a lot of unknowns when it comes to Pokémon Camp shinies. The encounter rate could be higher or lower than the normal 1 in 4,093, and it’s also unknown whether the Shiny Charm affects these encounters. Cooking curry back to back could cause some sort of chain that grants a bonus to encounter statistics or each Pokémon that appears could have its own encounter table. Regardless, it has been proven possible and shiny hunters now have a new method of hunting to look forward to exploring.

While it is a cool idea to be able to catch a shiny Pokémon through cooking and camping, it is by far one of the slowest methods. Pokémon only appear after cooking curry, which in itself takes a couple of minutes to complete. Even then, encounters after curry aren’t guaranteed. The fastest way to find a Pokémon Camp shiny would be to buy ten Nintendo Switches and ten copies of Pokémon Sword & Shield, but that may not fit into everyone’s budget. Happy hunting Pokémon Campers, and good luck… you’ll need it.
