There was once a time when a game was complete once a player had finished working through its story. That has not been the case for a while now. Between side quests and trying to complete 100% a title, it can feel as if some games are almost endless, and that is by no means a bad thing. There have been many occasions when we have reached the end of a game but we didn’t want it to be over. Well, nowadays, it doesn’t have to be.
One of the best franchises for giving its players more to do once the story mode is complete is Pokémon. Pokémon’s main story normally revolves around building as strong a team as possible and collecting badges to set players up to take on and defeat the Elite Four. After that, there’s still an extensive Pokédex to complete. If trainers have done both of those things, or don’t want to complete the Dex, then there is still so much more to do in the franchise’s latest installments, Sword & Shield.
You Never Know What You Might Find At Home
The first thing to do once a trainer has defeated Leon is venture off and find legendary Pokémon Zamazenta and Zacian, depending on which version of the game they have. The two dogs show their faces in the game, but escape before players have the chance to catch them. Revisit the shrine in the Slumbering Weald where there will be two men waiting for you. They will lead you around the Galar region in search of Zamazenta and Zacian.
Before hunting for Sword & Shield’s legendary dogs, players might want to head home. That’s because after completing the game’s story, a Master Ball will be waiting for them in the kitchen. Players familiar with the Pokémon franchise will know a Master Ball has a 100% chance of catching any Pokémon it is thrown at, which makes it perfect for catching the legendary dogs. Players can also get a Beast Ball from a blonde-haired man under a multi-colored umbrella in Stow-on-Side.
After that, hold your horses! Don’t leave your hometown just yet. Pop into Hop’s house first, as there will be another reward for finishing the story mode waiting for you. There will be a Pokéball in Hop’s room that is intended for you. In that Pokéball is a Charmander, but this is no normal Charmander. Evolve it into Charizard and that Charizard will have the ability to Gigantamax. Yes, Gigantamax Charizard is available elsewhere, but this is by far the easiest way to get one if a player has finished the story.
Charms, Towers, And Generous Strangers
Although Sword & Shield’s charms are available before the story is over, most players will have probably missed them. There are three to find, all of which will improve your gaming experience in a certain way. The Catching and Oval Charms can both be found inside the hotel in Circhester. The Catching Charm increases the chance of a critical catch, while the Oval Charm ups how many eggs a trainer can get from daycare. The Shiny Charm can be found after visiting Circhester, but not until a trainer has caught all 400 species of Pokémon. It also increases the odds of finding Shiny Pokémon.
How willing strangers are to hand over Pokémon in all of its games never ceases to amaze us. That trend continues in Sword & Shield. Once the story is completed, head back to Rose Tower in Wyndon where you will find a woman with a Type: Null stood beside her. She will hand over the Pokémon, along with all of its memory disks, just for talking to her.
Rose Tower is also where you’ll find our final recommendation for post-game activities. Otherwise known as the Battle Tower, it is full of NPCs with powerful Pokémon for trainers to test their mettle against. It’s not for nothing, either. Winning those battles will win trainers Battle Points, which can be traded for items.
This should be enough to tide players over for the time being. Don’t despair if you race through all of the above as quickly as you finished the game’s story mode, though, as expansion packs are coming later this year, so your journey through the Galar region is still far from over.
