The Pokemon TCG announced its newest expansion in Sword & Shield Vivid Voltage, and the upcoming set is a massive addition to the game that will add more VMAX Pokemon alongside a brand new card type. The Pokemon TCG has been making moves to be even more accessible than it traditionally is thanks to the release of Pokemon Trading Card Game Battle Academy, a board game adaptation of the card game that is intended to help new players understand the TCG variant while still providing a fun play experience.
While the Pokemon TCG has been around for two decades, it’s continuously iterated the game to keep up with the video game franchise, introducing new mechanics that mirror what has become popular in newer releases. Most recently, thanks to the release and success of Pokemon Sword & Shield, the TCG has added mechanics like VMAX while also fundamentally changing how the game works with a rules update that dramatically altered the first turn advantage that had become a metagame problem in 2019 (and, arguably, well before).
The Pokemon Company International announced earlier this week that the Pokemon TCG will be getting its newest expansion, Vivid Voltage, on November 13 with a worldwide launch. Vivid Voltage has a lot of innovations and additions to offer enfranchised players, including a first-ever printing of Mythical Pokemon Zarude into the TCG environment. The set is also headlined by the addition of six new VMAX Pokemon, including, crucially, Pikachu VMAX, a card that will undoubtedly become a must-own for many collectors and Pikachu fans worldwide.
There’s also a new card type coming in Vivid Voltage called “Amazing Pokemon,” which will see Legendary or Mythical Pokemon illustrated in a new variant to emphasize vibrant, eye-popping colors on top of new foil and etched details to accent the card. As a whole, the Pokemon TCG’s newest expansion will add 185 cards, a massive influx of possibilities into its tabletop and online gameplay, and some popular requests from fans like Pikachu VMAX.
The upcoming Pokemon TCG expansion is another example of how well The Pokemon Company manages to balance its set releases. While it’s clear that Vivid Voltage will offer players plenty of new experiences when it comes to play mechanics and card interactions, the addition of Amazing Pokemon and chase VMAX depictions like Gigantamax Pikachu also ensures that collectors will have plenty of targets in the upcoming expansion, which comes before the end of the year to help make the holiday season an interesting one for Pokemon TCG fans.
