Pokémon That Used To Be Humans Ranked

Pokémon are created in a lot of different ways in the Pokémon series. Some were created by the Pokémon god Arceus, some evolved into their new forms, and others were helpless humans who, through a horrible twist of fate, became Pokémon.

That’s right, some of those creatures you send out into battle were once human beings. Some were even children who have been twisted beyond recognition and given incredible powers to fight on your behalf and spend their lives inside of Pokeballs. Some are blissfully unaware of their new existence, while others are horrifically reminded of it every single day.

10 10. Spiritomb

This mysterious Pokémon was discovered bound to an odd keystone in Sea Mauville. The exact nature of where this Pokémon came from or why it’s trapped is unclear, but it has been revealed that it’s a Pokémon comprised of 108 human souls.

It doesn’t seem to possess any sentience or awareness of any kind, but the idea that 108 souls are trapped in this amalgamation as punishment for supposed misdeeds those souls, or perhaps the Pokémon, committed 500 years ago is disturbing. Players may never know the history behind this cursed Pokémon and that just might be a good thing.

9 9. Sandygast

This mound of sentient sand was the result of angry spirits holding grudges that possessed a mound of sand children made and became a Pokémon. This haunted pile of beach sand then latches onto anyone foolish enough to get close and forces them to make it bigger by piling on more sand.

The game never mentions what happens when the person is done, but considering the evolved version is a sentient sand castle called Pallossand with human bones in its core, it’s probably safe to say nothing good happens to those it latches onto.

8 8. Drifloon

Pokémon That Used To Be Humans Ranked

This balloon Pokémon seems harmless enough, however, this Pokémon was created from a bunch of wandering aimless souls who bound together for companionship. Those souls must be missing something in their life as they seek additional companionship by kidnapping small children and taking their souls to add to the group inside.

Horrifically, if its body bursts then the trapped human souls will spill out with horrendous screams and wails. The best defense for human children to avoid joining the Drifloon crowd is to become fat making it difficult for Drifloons to kidnap them.

7 7. Drifblim

Pokémon That Used To Be Humans Ranked

The evolved form of Drifloon is no better, this Pokémon is merely a Drifloon that obtained a vast amount of souls that it grew large enough to evolve. In fact, Drifblim looks like a Drifloon that is almost ready to burst from all the souls it’s obtained.

What’s terrifying about this stronger Pokémon is that it’s now capable of carrying off grown adults to add to the collection. When it starts to deflate, as balloons tend to, it becomes increasingly motivated to seek new souls to keep it inflated.

6 6. Gastly

While the origin of this Pokémon was up for debate for several years, Pokémon Ultra Sun clarifies its past by saying it was aggrieved spirits that possessed the gases leaking from a graveyard. It’s barely holding together but is really strong and can envelop and suffocate beings the size of elephants.

It’s not clear if it does this out of pure rage for the grief the spirits felt in death, or if it does this instinctually, but it’s a terrifying ghost Pokémon that only gets stronger as it evolves.

5 5. Froslass

Pokémon That Used To Be Humans Ranked

This icy Pokémon is the result of a woman who died while lost on a snowy mountain. Her spirit possessed an icicle which resulted in Froslass. It’s unclear why she was on the mountain in the first place, but Froslass has a craving for the souls of handsome men and freezes the bodies as decoration in its cave.

Whether this was a date gone wrong or something more nefarious is unknown, but now the nearby settlements where Froslass dwells must contend with this vicious monster seeking men to take to its lair to add to its collection.

4 4. Phantump

Pokémon That Used To Be Humans Ranked

Just when you thought the Pokémon world wasn’t dark enough, there’s the Phantump to remind you it can get so much worse. Phantumps are created when the spirits of children who became lost in the woods possess tree stumps.

These ghostly Pokémon emit eerie cries that can imitate a child’s voice to lure people into the woods so they presumably become lost and turn into additional Phantumps for companionship. Fun fact, some people pick the leaves off these stumps for medicinal purposes, because a child-spirit possessed tree stump seeking to turn other children into Pokémon wasn’t disturbing enough.

3 3. Gengar

Pokémon That Used To Be Humans Ranked

This mischievous Pokémon loves to play pranks on people and scare the living daylights out of anyone they find. Manipulating shadows, causing icy chills, and absorbing people’s body heat. It seeks to take lives in the most impish manner possible.

But don’t worry, the reason Gengar does this is because it was once a human and now wants others to join in on the hijinks… so it kills people and hopes their spirits turn into Pokémon. Gengar is a far cry from the semi-sentient smoke it once was as Gastly, now it’s a ghostly predator seeking to create other ghosts in a vicious cycle of personal amusement.

2 2. Kadabra

Pokémon That Used To Be Humans Ranked

Kadabra has an unusual back story when compared to others on this list. According to its Pokedex entry for Pokémon FireRed Kadabra was a boy with psychic abilities who woke up one morning to find he’d turned into a Pokémon.

Not only did this boy have to contend with the horrors of no longer being human and incapable of speech so he could explain who he is, but now he’s a target of Pokémon trainers wanting to use his psychic abilities to get an edge over other trainers. This isn’t even considering the idea of what happens to this boy and his mind when he evolves into an Alakazam.

1 1. Yamask

By far the most tragic case on this list, Yamasks are human spirits that carry masks said to be their faces when they were alive. When Yamask looks at their faces they sometimes cry. If this wasn’t tragic enough it’s important to remember that Yamask retains many of its memories from its previous life as a human.

Yamask is arguably the only one, according to Pokémon canon, that remembers its former life as a human and suffers depression as a result. All other Pokémon, except maybe Kadabra, have been changed by their transformation into Pokémon becoming monsters and animalistic beings driven by basic needs and desires. But not Yamask, they are aware of what happened to them and live with that tragedy every time they look at the mask that was once their face.
