Pokemon The 10 Most Useful Poke Balls Ranked

Keeping your animals fed and watered is of paramount importance. Proper housing is also critical. The Pokemon universe tends to recommend small balls with mechanized locks. We’d call this questionable, but who are we kidding? Everyone has called it questionable. Game Freak refuses to budge.

Let’s just embrace it, then. We can analyze Poke Balls per their overall usefulness in offering premium living space to our beloved pets, by which we mean a particular Poke Ball’s ability to strengthen our demands that a wild creature is caught and forcefully domesticated. If your goal is to catch them all, you’re already utilitarian; so go all the way, be Machiavellian, and select the very best tools for the job. You’ll get over it, Nurse Joy.

Updated March 2, 2022 by Quinton O’Connor: Nintendo’s gone and done the thing — Pokemon Scarlet & Pokemon Violet have been announced, even as fans continue to peck away at the award-winning Pokemon Legends: Arceus. There’s just so much Pokemon to go around right now, so we thought we’d best remind our readers how best to go about catching them all.

10 Heavy Ball

The Heavy Ball is for big Pokemon with hearty appetites. It’s for Snorlax. See? We have a picture of Snorlax up there and everything. The heftiest pocket monsters need the heaviest homes, and the heavier a Pokemon gets, the more likely a Heavy Ball is to lure them into their abode. It’s situational, to be sure. But like many of our entries, the Heavy Ball is also proof that when it comes to catching Pokemon, “situational” is frequently the most important word of all.

9 Fast Balls

Fast Balls are for life in the fast lane. Like Heavy Balls, there are only so many viable candidates. Pokemon with a Speed stat higher than 100 aren’t exactly found on every route, but frequent runners like Rapidash are susceptible to the speed at which these balls are tossed. (Actually, zero evidence exists that Fast Balls are thrown at professional baseball pitcher speeds or anything of the sort; we just figure it feels apt.) What holds Fast Balls down from rushing ever higher here is that their target range involves Pokemon species numbering in the dozens, not hundreds.

8 Safari Ball

Safari Balls serve one purpose and one purpose only. They’re what you to use to attempt catches in the Safari Zone. Entirely useless outside these excursions, few and far between as they are, it’s easy to forget they’re in your bag. But Safari Balls don’t just help at the Safari Zone. If you want to catch anything in there, this is your one and only choice. This means, yes, they are your only hope for certain rare Pokemon in every game a Safari Zone appears within. It’s impossible to leave anything off the list when it’s outright wrecked the competition on Scyther.

7 Net Ball

Pokemon The 10 Most Useful Poke Balls Ranked

Are Water Pokemon your style? Or maybe you’re a Bug Catcher — it’s fine, there’s bound to be someone out there who fits the bill. Either way, the Net Ball is yours. There’s a 350 percent uptick in success ratings when tossing a Net Ball at Water Pokemon as well as Bug Pokemon. The idea, of course, is that nets do great in oceans and in jungles. That kind of variability plugs into one of Pokemon’s coolest aspects. WIth 18 elemental types, there’s plenty of room for fun combination expressions. Net Balls might not last a second against Fire-types, then, but Poliwag and Wurmple are yours for the taking.

6 Dusk Ball

Net Balls combine two separate types. Dusk Balls combine two separate environments. With a 300 percent success modifier at nighttime as well as inside caves, they could have called it the Zubat Ball, and I’m not sure anyone would have batted a lash. Thankfully, the Dusk Ball has far more agency than increased effectiveness against what is perhaps the single most common wild Pokemon encounter in the series. This thing’s stellar against anything that haunts the night, like Ghost-types galore, as well as deep-cavern dwellers like Gible and Pupitar.

5 Beast Ball

Pokemon The 10 Most Useful Poke Balls Ranked

Beast Balls are the definition of “limited usage.” Against anything other than an Ultra Beast, they perform at one-tenth the success rate of an ordinary Poke Ball. They are laughable little spheres unworthy of our time except to point fingers and chortle most maliciously. But when an Ultra Beast is in the area, all the laughter stops. Suddenly, everything is coming up in prayers. Beast Balls are a whopping five times more effective against Ultra Beasts than the standard baseline. But when the Ultra Beast baseline is terrible — almost every ball is weak against them, including Ultras! — the Beast Ball comes to the rescue. It’s not what Alola deserves, but it is what Alola needs.

4 Ultra Ball

Most players know the drill. Poke Balls are purchased until Great Balls are made available. Great Balls improve upon Poke Balls’ catching efficiency by 50 percent. Great Balls remain dominant until Ultra Balls are available. Ultra Balls improve upon Great Balls’ catching efficiency by a further 50 percent. Written this way, it’s all very straightforward and mathematical, which is absolutely accurate. Ultra Balls are just Poke Balls that are twice as effective. But that’s all they need to be. Such simplicity has its welcome place in the world of Pokemon. You don’t throw dozens upon dozens of Poke Balls at rare Pokemon. You do so with Ultra Balls. So, you know, stock up on these. You’ll be glad you did.

3 Quick Ball

Ask most hardcore trainers their favorite Poke Ball variety and there’s a decent likelihood the answer will be the Quick Ball. Its limited availability in several generations has got to be intentional on Game Freak’s part; the loveliness of their concept is downright smile-inducing. Why so? Pray, answer this: what’s the most time-efficient way to catch a Pokemon? Catching the Pokemon in the very first turn, of course. Quick Balls tout an epic increase in catch rate if they’re thrown at the first turn of any wild Pokemon encounter. Mind you, they’re dreadful, positively dubious, beyond that first round. But hey. Imagine snagging Arceus five seconds into what was going to be a battle for the ages. It’s hilarious. You love to see it.

2 Timer Ball

Pokemon The 10 Most Useful Poke Balls Ranked

We’re bigger fans of the Timer Ball. It gains a slight boost every turn until maxing out at four-times normal catch rate some 20 turns into combat, which it maintains for every turn thereafter. It’s the opposite of the Quick Ball, and indeed, isn’t it better for a fight to end practically immediately? For certain, but how often will you nab a legendary that way? The odds are still stacked against you. Dawdle another 19 turns, however, and from there on out you’re throwing what we’ll call “Ultra Ball +++.” It’s only a matter of time from there, Mewtwo…

1 Master Ball

Pokemon The 10 Most Useful Poke Balls Ranked

The Master Ball will catch any Pokemon. Guaranteed. No struggle. No screams. Just forced servitude forever and ever. It’s immaculate. In every Pokemon campaign, you are awarded only one, and getting to the point that you qualify for more means trying your luck at lotteries time and again until you win. But the power is truly in your hands once you do. Nothing can stop you. The music swells and then dies out in a sputter of jingling congratulations music. The Master Ball is the most useful ball in Pokemon.

Though there is still one more thing worth mentioning.

Bonus: The Clone Ball

Are you literally Mewtwo? If so, we’re wrong. We’re guessing the odds are virtually nonexistent, however, so let’s stick with the Master Ball for the win. Still, imagine if you were Mewtwo? “In all candor,” you would tell the entire Pokemon League, “I will literally, officially, enslave every one of your Pokemon. They will then do my bidding. Maybe they will slaughter you.”

It’s a lot. The Clone Ball, you see, was designed to contain Mewtwo. (The Master Ball works just fine, but whatever, Pokemon movie writers.) Naturally, the devious and vengeful Mewtwo elects to use it against his foes. Honestly, it’s fair. Get ’em, Mewtwo. Get ’em with your Clone Ball. If we could use these in-game, they’d win the list. But we can’t, which is fine because we humans already have terrible stuff to our names. Like nuclear weapons. And fruitcakes.
