The anime, Pokémon Sun & Moon was packed full of some of the best animation in the history of all Pokémon anime series. Of course, this animation lent itself amazingly to the battles of the series, which were some of the most diverse as well due to the great cast introduced into the series.

This list will be looking at these many battles of the Sun & Moon and ranking the ten best in the series. It goes without saying that there will be spoilers in this list so for those that haven’t watched this great entry in the Pokémon series, go watch first.

10 Ash VS Hapu

This battle showcases the classic case of shonen protagonist plot-armor. Ash goes into this battle with absolutely no plan whatsoever against a Grand Trial Pokémon trainer like Hapu. He then uses Pikachu, who should actually take a giant beating from Hapu’s grand Mudsdale.

The carrying point that puts this battle on the list is the actual action and power showcased by Pikachu and his relentless Iron Tail techniques. While it made no sense, it was still a very fun battle.

9 Team Rocket VS Totem Raticate

Team Rocket having one of the most entertaining battles in a Pokémon anime series is a great surprise that many fans definitely enjoyed. It’s thanks to the newest member of Team Rocket that this fight was as spectacular as it was.

This battle is most definitely one that Jessie, James, and Meowth would have lost in classic Team Rocket fashion in any other season. However, Mimikyu and his horrible temper came through and resulted in a beat down on this giant Totem Raticate, showing off his awesome power and giving the fans a reason to love that episode.

8 Lillie VS Tyranitar

One of the best things about the Lillie vs Tyranitar battle was the character evolution that came from this single battle, showing just how great the build-up and storytelling in a Pokémon anime can be. Lillie started the series with no true interest in being a Pokémon trainer or battler and this fight truly brought that around.

The young trainer fought in one of her first big matches to save her friends from this giant Pokémon with her Vulpix and Sandslash. She uses all she’s learned and takes out the Tyranitar.

7 Ash VS Nanu

How could anyone not like any battle featuring Nanu? While this battle was another that at first, seems to make no sense at times, it does something that the VS Hapu match doesn’t. This fight features Ash growing as a character much like the previous battle.

Nanu’s battle from start to finish lets fans see Ash grow more, especially in the case of his new partner, Lycanroc. Before this battle Ash had no faith in him and after he trusted him as much as he did any of his other Pokémon.

6 Ash VS Gladion Match 2

The second battle of Ash and his new rival, Gladion is one of full-on epicness. Not only are fans shown Ash up against a legendary Pokémon in Gladion’s Type Null, but they are shown his Dusk-Form Lycanroc’s full power and berserk mode for the first time, and wow, the build-up to this moment was well worth it.

Lycanroc actually gets in a lot of hits on Type Null despite its Legendary status. This underdog battle against a Legendary really delivered.

5 Pikachu VS Mimikyu

For the first time in a very long time, in Pokémon Sun & Moon Team Rocket finally has a moment to be a true threat for Ash and the gang.

Equipped with their hate-powered Mimikyu, they get into a direct match with Ash and his Pikachu. To complete his ghost trial, Ash must take down this new ghost-type. Funny enough, Team Rocket almost wins this battle until Ash gets his shonen power-up going.

4 Kiwae VS Tapu Lele

Much like Lillie’s match against that Tyranitar, this battle is a great moment for the Kiwae character and one of the most unique battles in the entire Sun & Moon series. Kiwae had to quickly travel from island to island to get a scale from Tapu Lele for Tapu Fini, which made for a great build-up to the battle

This battle also has more weight than many others, as Kiwae’s Charizard actually almost feints. This entire trial battle could easily be one of the best character moments in the entire series.

3 Kiwae VS Brock

This battle felt like an amazing passing of the torch from Ash’s old partner, Brock to his new partner, Kiwae. Not only was the battle amazing but the animation behind it felt like the absolute best in the series so far.

This being the first true Gym Battle in Alola had many fans raising the expectation bar, as this amazing battle delivered so much. Besides, the fanservice of seeing Brock again can’t be denied, despite his appearance kind of making no sense with him seemingly have aged in life and Ash remaining a kid in school.

2 Bewaer VS Pheromosa

It was absolutely amazing finally seeing Bewaer at full power after seeing it used as a gag so many times. Well, this battle showed that its battle was absolutely no joke.

The power was reminiscent of something coming right out of Dragon Ball and is highly recommend to check out even for people not interested in the Pokémon Sun & Moon series.

1 Ash VS Olivia

Just about every fan of Pokémon Sun & Moon will agree with this placing. Ash vs Olivia was on a whole other level when compared to the battles of the Sun & Moon series. It’s great seeing Ash actually strategize with his Rowlett and Rockruff, and very reminiscent of how players must think in the games.

Not to mention, Olivia counterstrategized with her stealth-rock trap, which made this battle more realistic than most. Don’t forget the epic Rockruff vs Lycanroc scene that had many fans out of their seats. This battle is what many Pokémon anime battles strive to be.
