Pokémon The 5 Most Memorable (& 5 Most Forgettable) Characters of The Day

The adventures of Ash and his friends through the Pokémon anime has never been one for long drawn out stories, with most of the series being skippable save for a few key battles or catches. As many of the side characters only appear in a one-off episode or story, it’s easy for most of them to be long forgotten by time, particularly since the show has been airing for over 20 years.

On the other hand, there are also some characters that, despite their brief appearances, have been burned into the fan’s memories long after the show has forgotten they ever existed, leaving a lasting impression on both the main cast and the viewer.

10 Memorable: Samurai

This character is mostly memorable because of how stupid his battle was with Ash, as well as how dark the show turned when Ash daydreamed about his Metapod being cut in half by a Pincir. The highlight of this episode was the Metapod vs Metapod Harden battle, though it was also the episode where Ash’s Butterfree evolved while trying to save Ash from a swarm of wild Beedrill.

As one of the earliest episodes in the series, it could have been easy for Samurai to be completely forgotten over the years, but he is still remembered despite the episode being overshadowed by Butterfree.

9 Forgettable: Nurse Joy

Nurse Joy is a memorable part of the world of Pokémon and an integral part of the world’s healthcare system, but none of her incarnations ever stand out from the crowd. While there are episodes where one of the Joy’s will have a dedicated story, none of them are particularly interesting and it just leaves the entire family as nothing more than an excuse to reuse character models.

They are even identical in other regions of the world, which makes them even more forgettable since they are expected to always look alike.

8 Memorable: Elderly Stoutland

One of the best side stories in the Alola series was that surrounding Ash’s Litten and why it was always stealing food. After a short chase into the woods, Ash discovers that Litten is trying to gather food for an old Stoutland, who appears to have some sort of strong connection with Litten.

This Stoutland would return in a later episode, though it was also the episode surrounding its death with Ash and his friends trying to comfort Litten through its grief at losing its only family.

7 Forgettable: Officer Jenny

Officer Jenny has the same problem as Nurse Joy, in that she is nothing more than an excuse to reuse the same character model over and over again. Although her Unova model is recognizably different from her other versions, even this isn’t enough for her to stand out.

There are even more one-off episodes involving Officer Jenny than there are for Nurse Joy, though like her counterpart, none of them stand out enough from the crowd.

6 Memorable: Lance

Lance was already a popular character from the video games as both an Elite Four member as well as the champion in Pokémon Gold and Silver. His appearance in the Johto series wasn’t what made him stand out, however, as he was involved in the Lake of Rage side story in games as well as the anime.

What really made this character memorable was the fact that he caught the red Gyarados that was rampaging through the Lake of Rage, and he even returned in a recent episode of Pokémon Journeys to battle Leon with this same Pokémon.

5 Forgettable: Anthony

At first glance, Anthony could be any one of the many forgettable side characters introduced in the original series, but he is actually an important part of Ash’s journey and the main reason why he lost one of his most powerful Pokémon. Anthony is the trainer who battles Ash’s Primape in the P1 tournament and would later take Primape under his wing to become an even greater champion.

It’s sometimes easy to forget that Ash ever had a Primape since he had it for such a short amount of time, but this trainer is even more forgettable than the Pokémon he takes from the main character.

4 Memorable: Golduck

Misty’s Psyduck was often a source of irritation for the Water-type trainer, as it was often useless whenever she needed its help and is so dimwitted that it caught itself by accident while playing with one of Misty’s Pokéballs. Her attitude towards her dopey duck changed drastically, however, when she thought it had evolved into a powerful Golduck.

Unfortunately, this Golduck was actually wild, with her Psyduck being asleep for the entire episode and refusing to come out of its Pokéball. This twist pulled all viewers’ expectations out from under them, though they were left with one of the more memorable wild Pokémon seen in the series.

3 Forgettable: Palmer

Any side character from the Sinnoh series has a lot to live up to, as the fourth generation had so many good characters in its roster that it’s very easy for some to fall under the radar. Palmer was introduced as Barry’s father, a great trainer in his own right, and even became the Sinnoh Battle Tower leader.

Unfortunately for him, this wasn’t enough to keep the characters in people’s minds longer than a few episodes, as he was largely overshadowed by everything that followed.

2 Memorable: Tobias

This all-powerful trainer was teased at the beginning of the Sinnoh League for being the most likely person to claim victory over the others, which he did in the end.

Aside from his unique design, he stood out even among the likes of Barry and Paul during the Pokémon League, with his final battle with Ash being one of the best in the series, even if it was very one-sided. As Ash’s new goal is to be ranked number one in the World Coronation Series, it’s likely fans haven’t seen the last of Tobias.

1 Forgettable: Melvin

Unlike Samurai’s episode that resulted in Metapod evolving into Butterfree, Charmander’s first evolution episode is a lot more forgettable. In particular, the man responsible for setting up the chain of events that would lead to its evolution, the bumbling magician, Melvin, is entirely forgettable.

The only aspect of his character that is memorable is the fact that he mind-controlled a stampede of Exeggutor, and even that wasn’t that memorable.
