After the release of the first two Pokémon games, fans began to wonder what new types would be added to the franchise. After the addition of some of the other types such as Steel and Dark, it was unclear what else made sense for them to include in future generations.
That question was easily answered when the Fairy-type was introduced, which had famous Pokémon like Super Smash Bros. fighter Jigglypuff added into it, retroactively. But what are the best of the best Fairy-types, though? Here’s a look at the best Fairy-type Pokémon from every generation through Pokémon Sword & Shield.
8 GENERATION 8: Grimmsnarl
First off, Grimmsnarl is visually the antithesis of what most people assume Fairy-type Pokémon looks like. This troll-inspired forest-dweller may not have a face most mothers would love, but thankfully it makes due and is a force in battle.
None of its base stats are poor, and while most of them are pretty average, it happens to have a top-tier physical attack which goes great with its above-average health and special attack stats. There is plenty of other Fairy-type Pokémon that outclass it in the franchise, but it’s the top of its class in the Galar region.
7 GENERATION 7: Primarina
The 7th generation of games did a great job of giving all three starters a secondary typing that wasn’t too common. Primarina, the Water-type starter managed to get the secondary typing of Fairy which went well with its mermaid aesthetic it had going for it in its design.
Don’t for its elegant and serene look, though. This water canine comes equipped with great attack and defense in the world of special moves. Thankfully many of the most powerful and useful Fairy and Water-type moves are special, and not physical.
6 GENERATION 6: Sylveon
Sylveon somehow managed to do the impossible when it was revealed as the brand new Fairy-type Eeveelution in the 6th generation of games. It managed to meet expectations based on the overwhelming fervor from fans regarding Eevee getting a Fairy-type evolution.
On top of doing that Sylveon also came equipped with solid base stats that made it a good choice to pair with a team of five other Pokémon in hopes of becoming Pokémon Champion. Its hidden ability Pixilate turns all of its Normal-type moves into Fairy-typed ones.
5 GENERATION 5: Whimsicott
One might think to themselves that the only reason Whimsicott made this list is because its line is the only Fairy-type in the entirety of the 5th generation. While that may be factually true, that doesn’t mean Whimsicott doesn’t come with its own set of strengths it can tout.
On top of simply being adorable, this rather light critter has tremendous speed at its side. Whimsicott is the perfect Pokémon representation of the “Jack of all trades, master of none” saying that often gets passed around as a backhanded compliment.
4 GENERATION 4: Togekiss
Since Togepi ascended to become one of the franchise’s most recognizable and popular creatures, many forget that it can actually evolve from just being an adorable speckled egg. Togekiss is its final form and turns the tiny precious thing into a lovable but formidable Pokémon.
Its only true weakness is its physical attack, but it can make up for it with the rest of its base stats which happen to mostly be above average. It’s ability Super Luck gives it the added benefit of its attacks landing critical strikes a bit more frequently.
3 GENERATION 3: Gardevoir
If this list was simply based on the visual design of Pokémon and nothing more, Gardevoir would have still very easily made the cut. This elegant and ethereal living entity can sense the future and uses this ability to protect itself. Trainers who love doubles or triples battles Gardevoir is a no-brainer of a pick.
Gardevoir’s hidden ability Telepathy allows it to avoid ally attacks which help open up the possible attacks a team can use. For certain trainers, knowing that their Pokémon is safe from the opponent’s area of effect moves thanks to Gardevoir gives them an additional level of strategy.
2 GENERATION 2: Granbull
Anyone who’s had the chance to watch the Detective Pikachu film was probably reintroduced to the cute bulldog Pokémon named Snubbull. Its final evolution, Granbull, rarely gets any love despite being a Pokémon based on a dog. This feisty canine can physically attack with the best of them and has a good amount of health at its disposal.
Just don’t expect it to win any speed contests any time soon. The Intimidate ability is one made famous by the ever-popular Gyarados of the Kanto region, which gives Snubbull another reason why it deserves to be caught, trained, and loved.
1 GENERATION 1: Clefable
Clefable and Wigglytuff are the two Fairy-type heavy hitters of the Kanto region. On the surface, they seem rather comparable, but a glance at each of their base stats shows Clefable is the better balanced and superior Fairy-type of the two.
That being said, it’s still more of a role player and support unit for a team and shouldn’t be positioned as the lead fighter. Any Pokémon who comes in contact with it can become infatuated due to its Cute Charm ability, which can turn the tide of battle now that the enemy Pokémon refuses to attack.
