Pokémon Theme Park Coming To Universal Studios In 2020

It looks like the planned Super Nintendo World addition to the Universal Studios theme park in Orlando is going to be even bigger than originally planned, as recent news reports suggest that a Pokémon park will be coming in 2020.

WFTV news in Florida recently reported on several upcoming attractions that are being added to Universal Studios Orlando, which include a Fast and the Furious ride that is coming this year and a Harry Potter ride that is due in 2019. They will be followed by a Pokémon park in 2020, which will be followed by the Orlando-version of Super Nintendo World, which has been delayed to 2023.

The Pokémon park will be added to the KidZone section of Universal Studios, which is where part of Super Nintendo World was going to appear. The KidZone was originally going to host rides based on the Mario Kart and Donkey Kong games. These attractions are being saved for a 400-acre lot that is being added to the park, which will presumably carry most of the upcoming Nintendo rides.

There is currently no word on whether these developments will affect the Super Nintendo World park that is currently being built in Universal Studios Japan, which is meant to be the prototype for similar Nintendo-themed attractions that will be built in the other Universal Studios across the world.

The Super Nintendo World that is being built in Japan is supposed to be ready in time for the 2020 Summer Olympics, which are going to be held in Tokyo. This is a tight production schedule for a theme park and there have been concerns over whether Super Nintendo World will meet its expected opening date.

The addition of Pokémon related attractions to Universal Studios Orlando will be exciting to many fans of the series, though it cannot help but feel like a stopgap solution to the now five-year delay of Super Nintendo World.

Will we see similar issues with the flagship iteration of Super Nintendo World over the coming year and a half? Will Mario and his friends be ready in time for the Olympics? Only time will tell…
