Everyone and their Pikachu is playing Pokemon Go — and it seems that everyone is listening to the classic Pokemon theme tune as they attempt to catch ’em all.

Pokemon Go has only been available for a matter of days, and it’s yet to release in a number of regions, but it’s already a huge hit. As it turns out, the popularity of the new location-based spin on the classic creature-collecting franchise is sparking plenty of nostalgia among its players.

Spotify has announced that the amount of users streaming the theme song to the Pokemon animated series has increased massively over the past week. Streams of “Gotta Catch ‘Em All” have increased more than 360 percent over the last seven days.

Pokemon Go seems to be targeted at lapsed Pokemon fans as much as the devotees who have played every instalment. For now, only the original 150 monsters from the Kanto Pokedex are available in the game, which no doubt appeals to fans who were more familiar with that set of creatures.

However, it’s not just the classic theme that’s getting some attention. Apparently Spotify is home to some 190,000 playlists that feature the word “Pokemon” in their title, with another 53,000 that are named “Pikachu.”

This is another indication of the extent to which the world is once again in the grip of Pokemon fever. People who haven’t played the mainline series in years are walking miles to find monsters, contest gyms and hatch eggs — and seemingly listening to the Pokemon anthems of yesteryear as they do so.

“Gotta Catch ‘Em All” is the most popular Pokemon-related song on the service, but it’s not the only tune seeing an uptick in popularity thanks to the success of Go. The “Pokerap” is a deserving runner-up, while “Pokemon Johto,” “Go Pokemon Go,” and “I Want to Be a Hero” round out the top five.

However, it has to be said that the trainers swapping out the game’s stock sounds for the hits of yesteryear are missing out to an extent. The high-intensity rearrangement of the traditional theme that’s used in Pokemon Go is sure to hype players up sufficiently — even if the looping track could definitely be a little longer.

Still, the fact that Spotify has recorded such a massive jump in streaming figures seems to be further evidence that mobile gaming is going to be hugely profitable for Nintendo. Pokemon Go isn’t just a big hit — it’s reigning mainstrem interest in the Pokemon franchise in all its forms.

Pokemon GO is available for iOS and Android devices in select regions.
