Pokemon Trading Card Game Reveals Chilling Reign Expansion Coming This Year

The Pokemon Trading Card Game Sword and Shield series’ next expansion will tie in with the recent Crown Tundra DLC, The Pokemon Company has revealed. This new expansion set comes when interest in the Pokemon TCG is at a new high.

The previous set, Sword and Shield: Battle Styles, was released on March 19, 2021, and added a brand-new technique to the game where some cards specialized in Single Strike or Rapid Strike moves. Single Strike cards focus on dealing damage, while Rapid Strike cards used technical abilities and sneaky moves, adding new strategies for players to build their deck around.

The newly revealed set is called Sword and Shield: Chilling Reign, and will feature the Legendary Pokemon Calyrex, which appeared in the main narrative of the Crown Tundra DLC. The set will include Ice Rider Calyrex VMAX and Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX cards, as well as the Galarian forms of Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Further tying in with Calyrex’s two forms, the new set seems to be themed around Ice and Ghost-type Pokemon. This new set is due out June 18, 2021, and will hopefully capitalize on soaring interest levels in the Pokemon TCG.

Sword and Shield: Chilling Reign will include over 190 cards, many of Pokemon from the Galar region, and will also add five Pokemon V and eight Pokemon VMAX cards, which are based on Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon respectively. New Single Strike and Rapid Strike cards will also be added. These sets are not the only thing Pokemon TCG fans should be keeping an eye on, as The Pokemon Company will begin releasing classic Pokemon cards in April 2021.

While the renewed interest in the Pokemon TCG is great for The Pokemon Company, fans are not completely happy. Pokemon cards have recently become the target of scalpers buying up stock and reselling it online at inflated prices. This has left many players unable to acquire the new sets, such as Sword and Shield: Battle Styles, and actually use the cards for their intended purpose. The scalpers show no signs of slowing down after clearing out stores and McDonald’s Happy Meals.

Whether or not The Pokemon Company or retailers can do anything to combat scalping ahead of the new set’s release remains to be seen. However, if the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ongoing shortages are anything to go by,Pokemon TCG fans may be in for a real battle to get their hands on the new set.
