When it comes to the various roles in MOBA games, there are simple classifications pinned to each as a way of helping players identify how a particular character should be used on the battlefield. Pokemon Unite has 5 different roles that split up the roster: Attacker, Defender, Speedster, Supporter, and All-Rounder.
While each pokemon in the aforementioned roles follows similar playstyles as others of their type, there is still a difference between how each individual pokemon, and their trainer, go about playing this fast-paced game.
Defenders are meant to stop enemies from scoring as well as backing up their more offensively inclined comrades in confrontations. Currently, there are only 3 Defenders in the game, and players should select one of them after learning a bit about their strengths and weaknesses.
Snorlax
Snorlax’s Basic Attacks
Snorlax’s basic attack combo consists of 2 punches before performing a strong bellyflop as the 3rd attack (the boosted attack), which has a small area of effect.
Snorlax’s Ability
Gluttony allows Snorlax to recover more HP from consuming berries found around the map, which is very handy and can greatly increase a player’s longevity on the battlefield.
Snorlax’s Movesets
Initially, Snorlax will start with the moves Tackle and Rest, though, players will need to change Tackle into either Heavy Slam or Flail at level 6 and will also need to swap out Rest for either Block or Yawn at level 8.
For the most part, the majority of Snorlax players will have to choose Heavy Slam over Flail, as Heavy Slam is this pokemon’s only true damage-dealing move out of the 4 main ones they can learn. Heavy Slam will cause the large Normal-type pokemon to do a ground-pound that has a decent area of effect and will send foes flying into the air briefly, stunning them as well as taking away a notable bit of HP. By comparison, the buff granted by Flail to slightly boost the damage of basic attacks is not nearly as useful.
Many players find it unfortunate that Snorlax is forced to remove Rest when reaching level 8, as it is probably the best healing move in the game for purely regenerating HP quickly. However, both Block and Yawn can be used to great effect, as the former allows Snorlax to become a literal wall by summoning a barrier that repels enemies and the latter puts adversaries to sleep for a few seconds, granting wide windows for attacking or escaping.
Snorlax’s Unite Move – Power Nap
This powerful move essentially turns Snorlax into a living roadblock for a few seconds. Power Nap puts the user to sleep and causes them to regenerate HP very quickly, similar to Rest, but also causes them to emit loud snoring that deals damage over time to nearby enemies while also not allowing them to pass through Snorlax’s hitbox (allies can still do so).

Ideally, it’s best to focus on increasing Snorlax’s survivability with items as opposed to trying to get them to deal more damage to enemies. As a Defender, and in regards to their stats and moves, it’s much more important for Snorlax players to be able to hold a position than to take out adversaries. Items that recover HP and increase Defense are therefore the best to use for Snorlax.
Crustle
Crustle’s Basic Attacks
While they do more damage on average than the basic attacks of any other Defender, Crustle’s most common type of offense is a bit lackluster, composing of 2 quick slashes followed by a slightly stronger boosted attack slash.
Crustle’s Ability
Sturdy acts as a passive buff that boosts Crustle’s Defense and Special Defense every time that they lose a certain amount of HP, which only seems to reset when Crustle gets knocked out, meaning that the longer Crustle stays in the battle, the stronger it will become.
Crustle’s Movesets
At first, Dwebble, Crustle’s previous form, will start off with Rock Slide and Fury Cutter, but at level 4 will have to trade Rock Slide for either Rock Tomb or Shell Smash, while, at level 6, players will have to turn Fury Cutter in for either Stealth Rock or X-Scissor.
Rock Tomb is ideal for creating a temporary wall to either stop an opponent from entering an area or even prevent them from escaping. This is a typical move for a Defender, however, the other possible move, Shell Smash, offers the chance for Crustle to become the hardest-hitting Defender in the game thanks to the buff to Attack and movement speed gained from it.
The choice between selecting either Stealth Rock or X-Scissor will come down to what players selected between Rock Tomb and Shell Smash at level 4, as pairing these moves appropriately is crucial for the success of a Crustle build. Those who chose Rock Tomb should pick Stealth Rock and opt for a more traditional Defender build that impairs and hinders enemies while those who chose Shell Smash should use it to power up X-Scissor to hurt foes and slam them into walls to stun them.
Crustle’s Unite Move – Rubble Rouser
This move can change the tide in battle, especially if Crustle has been active for a long time and has gained a ton of Defense and Special Defense from the effects of Sturdy. When used, Rubble Rouser will create an area of effect around Crustle that will trap foes and deal damage to them over time while also applying a shield to the user. If Crustle takes damage while using their Unite move, the damage over time caused by its effects will become greater.

Increasing Crustle survivability with items is not a bad idea, however, thanks to Shell Smash (arguably Crustle’s best move), players can also hit quite hard and move very quickly, meaning that this Defender can escape tricky situations or unleash ambushes more effectively than other Defenders. Battle Items like X Attack and Eject Button would be solid choices for such reasons. Using Held Items that stack with the defensive buffs gained from Sturdy or that increase Crustle’s damage output are also sensible choices.
Slowbro
Slowbro’s Basic Attacks
As the only Defender with ranged basic attacks, Slowbro occupies a niche that allows them to act somewhat like a tower with a cannon as opposed to a generic wall. This pokemon will shoot water from their mouth in 3 blasts, the first 2 being minute and the 3rd being about twice as strong, though follows the same attack pattern.
Slowbro’s Ability
When it comes to endurance, Slowbro’s Oblivious grants great longevity, though in a different manner than simply increasing their stats. Oblivious will cause all incoming damage done to Slowbro to be applied gradually as opposed to all at once (displayed by the blue portions of one’s normally green HP bar), meaning that even the heaviest-hitting moves cannot usually take out Slowbro immediately. If Slowbro also is attacking foes, the damage that they do to adversaries will subtract from the pending damage, negating much of it before it can take effect and truly hurt Slowbro. This means that Slowbro players should focus on standing their ground in most situations so that they can negate more incoming damage and trade blows optimally with enemies.
Slowbro’s Movesets
Beginning with Water Gun and Slack Off, Slowpoke, the prior form of Slowbro, will have to ditch Water Gun and choose between Scald or Surf as they evolve at level 4. Upon reaching level 6, they will then have to trade in Slack Off for either Amnesia or Telekinesis.
Surf is an odd move for Slowbro, as it is a dash that hits foes with linear waves while also thrusting Slowbro at the enemy, the latter part being less than ideal for a Ranged Defender as keeping a distance is better for Slowbro. Though, Surf is great for shoving opponents around and can be greatly helpful in a number of situations. However, Scald will always deal more damage, as its jet of boiling water naturally hurts foes more as well as burns them for some damage over time (as well as slowing their movement, similar to the auxiliary effect of Surf).
Selecting between Amnesia and Telekinesis will depend on what build players are going for with Slowbro. Those interested in controls the flow of battle should select the latter, as Telekinesis will temporarily lift enemies into the air to open them up for allies to attack, though, this move of Slowbro’s deals no damage of its own. Those seeking to become a veritable tank should opt for Amnesia, as it is a very powerful buff that increases Slowbro’s Defense and Special Attack while also increasing the effects of damage negation caused by Oblivious as well as gives a flat damage bonus to either Scald or Surf.
Slowbro’s Unite Move – Slow Beam
Out of all the Unite moves wielded by Defender pokemon, Slowbro’s Slow Beam is the best for a guaranteed takedown on weakened enemies, as, when used, it will bind the user and a singular target telepathically while making Slowbro immune to all outside influence for a time. When connected, the target will be unable to attack or move as Slowbro slowly decimates their HP bar. If the target is below half-HP, there is a strong chance that Slow Beam will knock them out.

As one would expect, HP regeneration on Slowbro is sufficiently powerful, as, combined with the immense damage negation, results in Slowbro becoming virtually indestructible against any singular threat of equal level. If a well-equipped Slowbro is within one of their own goal zones, the passive healing in addition to their natural traits can even let players defend against 2 enemies by themselves while also returned enough damage to make them back off.
