Pokemon Unite Are There Type Advantages

In Pokemon Unite, players take control of one Pokemon on a team of five in a contest to see who can score the most points against the others. This MOBA style gameplay is a first for the franchise, and although it has only been out for a few short days, players seem to be enjoying it so far. One question nagging at the back of many players’ minds is how type advantages work, as this wasn’t mentioned in any of the tutorials. By instinct, players might assume that type advantages are baked into the game, but this is surprisingly not the case. There are no type advantages in Pokemon Unite.

In most Pokemon games, every Pokemon is assigned one or two types from the 18 currently available options. Each of these types has strengths and weaknesses, and players are encouraged to learn and use these to their advantage. Pokemon Unite is unique in that type advantages play no role in how a combat turns out.

A classic example of type advantages is the trio of starter Pokemon. In the first generation of Pokemon games, for example, the starter Pokemon are Bulbasaur, Squirtle, and Charmander. Bulbasaur is a Grass type and is therefore weak against Charmander’s fire type and strong against Squirtle’s water type. In Pokemon Unite, the situation where a Venusaur and a Charizard go head to head arises quite often, and it may be instictive for veteran Pokemon players to avoid that at all costs, but the match up will actually be even.

As strange as this feature (or lack thereof) is, it does make a lot of sense. It would be almost impossible to balance Pokemon Unite with only 20 playable Pokemon if type match ups came into play. Ice type Pokemon like Alolan Ninetails would find themselves at a huge disadvantage against the numerous Fire type Pokemon in the game such as Charizard, Cinderace, and Talonflame. Likewise, a Ghost type Pokemon like Gengar would be completely immune to many of Wigglytuff’s attacks. With all this in mind, it’s understandable why Tencent and TiMi Studios opted to just scrap type advantages for this game.

Even so, it’s odd that it wasn’t mentioned at all in the tutorial. Given that Pokemon games are known to have type advantages, veterans of the franchise are expecting them even in a game like this. On the bright side, this means that players don’t have to worry about type putting them at a disadvantage, although the potential pay to win aspects of Pokemon Unite still might.

Pokemon Unite is available now on Switch and later on Mobile.
