Pokemon Unite Gengar Build Guide

Gengar has been a fan-favourite Pokemon ever since the series’ debut 25 years ago. Traditionally, it’s always been relatively powerful in competitive Pokemon, having been a mainstay in the meta for donkey’s years – but Pokemon Unite is different.

Despite being a special sweeper for over two decades, Gengar’s MOBA playstyle is pretty different to its established one. Here, Gengar is a Speedster, meaning that alongside Zeraora, Talonflame, and Absol, its main purpose is to roam the Jungle for point opportunities and low-health enemies.

As a result, this Gengar build might look a little different to what you might expect in a more conventional Pokemon game. If you’re trying out Unite for the first time and have your eyes set on becoming a Ghost-type main, look no further than our handy Pokemon Unite Gengar build guide, which tells you everything you need to know about the moves, items, and strategies necessary for playing Gengar like a real pro.

Pokemon Unite Gengar Build Guide: Best Moves

Just like we mentioned in our Zeraora and Garchomp builds guides, moves and techniques work pretty differently in Pokemon Unite. You begin each match by choosing one of two moves, and unlock the one you didn’t select once you reach level three. As the match progresses and you continue to level up, both of these moves can be upgraded to better techniques, while your special Unite move will become available towards the end of the game.

Gengar’s first choice is between Lick and Will-o-Wisp. At this point you’ll be playing as Gastly, who has limited mobility and has to operate at a melee range. As a result, Lick will help you rack up kills on wild ‘mons quicker, meaning you’ll unlock Will-o-Wisp pretty fast anyway. While Gengar has been associated with Shadow Ball for decades, Sludge Bomb is a better choice for your first new move because of the fact it poisons enemies. This is why you should also choose Hex over Dream Eater given that Hex does increased damage on enemies afflicted by status conditions. It might seem a bit unconventional, but this is how to get the highest DPS possible for Gengar, especially if you use Shadow Ball and Hex in tandem with your Unite move, Phantom Ambush, which allows you to go invisible and deal big AoE damage on the opposing team.

Pokemon Unite Gengar Build Guide: Best Items

For held items, you’ll want to make use of Gengar’s best assets: attack and speed. There’s no point in running something like Leftovers on a Pokemon as squishy as Gengar, so I’d recommend something like the Float Stone to increase your speed out of combat and make even better use of your Jungling potential. On top of that, items like the Wise Glasses increase your special attack, as do the Special Attack Specs (obviously). Combining these three together is basically just making the MOBA version of a special sweeper.

For battle items, stuff like Potions are pretty useless. I’d recommend running X Attack to further increase your damage output or something like the Eject Button or Fluffy Tail so you can sneakily or cheekily escape precarious matchups.

Pokemon Unite Gengar Build Guide: Best Playstyle

Like Zeraora, Gengar is best played as a Jungler. When you spawn as Gastly, rack up as many wild Pokemon kills as possible to evolve into Haunter. From here, use the grass in the Jungle (middle lane) to stay hidden, eyeing up wild Pokemon spawns, low-health enemies, and scoring opportunities. If you police this area properly, you should be in for a very high-scoring match, especially because you can even travel through walls once you evolve into Gengar at level nine.
