Pokemon Unite’s holowear offerings have been a bit of a rollercoaster. For every adorable hipster skin for Wigglytuff, you have a $40 Halloween costume for Lucario. However, while the discourse around the pricing persists, some fans also have a problem with the actual content we’re getting, feeling that it just isn’t drawing enough inspiration from the source material.

A popular thread on the Pokemon Unite subreddit has many fans complaining that the skins lack imagination. They call on the developers to base future holowear on the base games, or at least include some which significantly alter the Pokemon’s model, making the often high price tag more worthwhile.

The post that is generating this discussion is titled: “Is it me or does this game have the worst skins of all MOBAs?” In the post, user eusebioadamastor argues, “[Charizard] could have a fossilized skin, a mecha skin, a zombie skin, a fairy skin[…] But no, he wears a bandana and a shirt”.

Many in the replies agree. “What I expected for the skins in this game was other Pokemon. For example, you could have a Plusle skin for Pikachu”, suggests Wilwarinialo. Others also request regional alternatives get added to the game, as right now Ninetales is only available in its Alolan form.

Some players also believe holowear could be used to bring in some Nintendo crossovers, with BaLance_95 saying: “Ridley skinned Charizard, Bowser skinned Blastoise, Yoshi skinned Greedent. Would be amazing to see these.”

However, few are convinced that this will come about. Some hypothesise that this is because the Pokemon IP is well protected, with Nintendo reluctant to allow for any crossovers that create brand confusion. There is actually precedent for this, as it is known that early development of the original Super Smash Bros. was kept hidden from higher-ups, as Masahiro Sakurai knew the project would not get approved.

Of course, the pricing remains the biggest point of contention, and is still compared unfavourably to other MOBAs. “I really don’t like that people use the ‘when [League of Legends] was starting out’ argument to defend it either”, reads another reply. “LoL came out 11 years ago now? Game design and monetization practices have evolved since then and I think LoL has done a pretty good job adapting to the changes.”

Whether you love the microtransactions or not, Pokemon Unite is out now, and available to play on Nintendo Switch and mobile.
